No Joke, Ducks stun Wildcats rallying from 10 down
04/02/23 | Baseball
Sabin Ceballos capped the Ducks epic rally giving Oregon the lead for the first time in the game with a two-run single in the top of the ninth that scored Colby Shade and Drew Cowley. Closer Josh Mollerus recorded the final three outs in the bottom half of the inning for his third save.
Oregon entered the ninth trailing 11-10 after whittling what appeared to be an Arizona commanding 10-run lead after two innings to a single run after the eighth.
Like he had done throughout the game, Rikuu Nishida sparked the Ducks (17-7, 5-3 Pac-12) rally with a one-out double to set the table for Oregon's 2-3-4 hitters who combined for six hits and seven RBI during the game.
Shade followed Nishida's two-bagger with his own double, a line-shot into the left-center field gap to score Nishida and tie the game. Cowley followed with a chopper through the six-hole moving Shade to third with one out. Ceballos responded lining a 2-ball, 1-strike pitch into left field to score both runners.
How It Happened: Arizona (14-11, 3-8 Pac-12) took advantage of some breaks and some inconsistent Ducks' defense scoring four runs in the first and six more in the second. Oregon turned to freshman reliever Matthew Grabmann to slow Arizona's offense and the former Canadian Junior National Team member responded.
Grabmann tossed a scoreless 3.1 innings with four strikeouts, allowing Oregon's offense to start to mount its comeback. Grabmann left the game after the fifth turning it over to fellow freshman Grayson Grinsell who held the Wildcats to one run in 1.2 innings with a pair of Ks. Senior Matt Dallas (4-0) got the final out of the seventh on a strikeout before pitching a scoreless eighth.
Oregon's offense took advantage of the bullpen's success, scoring in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings.
Nishida got things going for Oregon in the third inning with what would be the first of his five hits in consecutive at-bats. The Ducks leadoff reached on an infield single before moving to third when Arizona second baseman Garen Caufield could not field a hard-hit ball by Shade. Cowley drove in Nishida with a ground out cutting the lead to nine.
Oregon tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Jacob Walsh led off the frame with a double to left center before Bennett Thompson reached on an error putting runners at first and second. After a pair of strikeouts, Nishida responded with a RBI single scoring Walsh. Shade followed with a RBI single of his own and the lead was cut to seven.
Oregon pulled within five runs in the sixth scoring twice more. Dominic Hellman and Gavin Grant had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, before Nishida (double) and Shade (sac fly) combined to drive in two more runs.
Arizona answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Oregon responded scoring five runs in the seventh to pull within one. Tanner Smith walked to start the rally before moving to second on Walsh's third hit of the day.
Pinch hitter Owen Diodati ripped a double into the right-field corner scoring Smith and moving Walsh to third. Hellman picked up both base runners with a two-RBI single up the middle. Grant followed with a bunt single, setting up Nishida again. He came through with a RBI up the middle scoring Hellman before Shade picked up his second sacrifice fly of the night scoring Grant.
Oregon had a chance to tie it in the inning, but Ceballos lined out to the second baseman to end the threat.
Box Score Notes: The comeback from 10 runs down is the largest lead Oregon has overcome in its modern era … The previous biggest come-from-behind win was seven runs vs. Washington State last year (4/22/22) … Oregon's 21 hits on Saturday followed the Ducks' 22-hit effort on Friday, marking the first time Oregon has ever had 20-plus hits in consecutive games … Nishida's (5-for-6, 3 RBI, 2 R, SB) five hits were a career high and gave him seven in the first two games of the series … His stolen base was his 13th of the season, one shy of cracking the school's single-season top 10 … Walsh (3-for-6, 2 R) also has seven hits in the series after collecting four on Friday night … Oregon scored multiple runs in four separate innings on Saturday night, making it seven multi-run innings for the series after the Ducks did it twice on Friday … Four Oregon relievers (Grabmann, Grinsell, Dallas, Mollerus) combined to allow just one run on eight hits in 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts and just three walks.
On Deck: Oregon will look for its first ever series sweep in Tucson against the Wildcats with the series finale starting Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field. The Ducks will send freshman Leo Uelmen (2-2, 5.86) to the mound.
