Oregon Defeats #17 Stanford on Senior Day
04/23/23 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Three Oregon seniors secured individual wins on Senior Day, propelling the Ducks to a 4-1 win.
A day of celebration was capped off with a top-20 win for Oregon, as the senior class pushed the Ducks to victory. Stanford got the Ducks in a hole early, after the Cardinal won courts one and two in doubles to secure the first point of the match.
Senior Luke Vandecasteele quickly got one back for Oregon after he defeated Anders Matta 6-1, 6-0 on court six to even things at 1-1. The rest of the courts were trading point after point, as a marathon match was developing. Jesper Klov-Nilsson was in the three spot and pulled out a straight-set win, 6-2, 6-3.
With a 2-1 lead, Vlad Breazu pulled out a tough first set, 7-6 (7-5) and momentum swung in favor of Oregon. The home crowd started to feel the shift and the added energy pushed the team. Soon after, Joshua Charlton secured a 6-0, 6-4 win over No. 22 ranked Max Basing. The Ducks just needed one more point and were in good position on all three remaining courts. The victorious point came from the freshman Vlad Breazu on court five, a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory that brought the fans to their feet.
"We had a great crowd today and I'm excited the boys gave them something to cheer for," said head coach Nils Schyllander. "Senior Day is always a bittersweet day, because of how close you get with the guys. I was glad to see three of our four points come from seniors, a fitting way for them to go out here in Eugene."
