Ducks’ Efforts Not Enough Against Stanford
04/23/23 | Women's Lacrosse
STANFORD, Calif. — Oregon found moments of success against the Cardinal on Sunday but could not keep pace with the perennial power in a 16-9 defeat.
The Ducks (5-10, 1-8 Pac-12) could not find their footing offensively, giving Stanford (9-7, 7-2 Pac-12) opportunities to pull away.
"We fought hard today," said head coach Chelsea Hoffmann following Sunday afternoon's contest. "It is tough when things do not go your way. Overall, I thought our group adjusted well to the circumstances." Hoffmann said.
How it Happened: Oregon surrendered the first goal of the game to Stanford's Katy Gilbert but quickly found a response in Morgan McCarthy's 33rd goal of the season, a tidy finish from free position.
The Cardinal would respond in a significantly, going on a 4-0 run that encompassed a 4-1 finish to the first period and would grow to a 5-1 advantage into the second. The Ducks found a pair of goals with support from Alyssa Wright, first with an assist to Madysyn Sweeney in transition before putting away her 13th of the season.
That momentum swing would not last long, as the Cardinal took hold once again with a 4-0 run in the second quarter behind goals from four different contributors. Riley Taylor capped off the first half for Oregon on a positive note to make it 9-4 heading into the break.
Stanford nabbed the second half's first goal behind a quick one-two between Jay Browne and Annabel Frist. McCarthy scored her second behind some creative passing from team assist leader Lauren Rismani. The Cardinal continued to outpace the Ducks, putting away another three goals to cap off the third period at 13-5.
Rachel Pallo kicked off the fourth quarter by scoring her seventh goal of the season. Stanford's Sarah Jaques scored consecutive goals to make it 15-6. Oregon would score three goals near the end of regulation to conclude Sunday's contest at 16-9.
Who Stood Out: Taylor finished with a goal and an assist in her first start for the Ducks. Rismani finished with multiple goals in consecutive games for the second time this season.
Notable: Cassidy Eckert finished Sunday with double-digit saves for the ninth time in her career ... The Ducks took the draw control 16-13 on Sunday after losing that matchup 24-5 on March 19 … McCarthy grew her goal-scoring streak to 26 consecutive games.
Up Next: Oregon wraps up the regular season with a trip to Boulder to take on Colorado (3 p.m. PT, Colorado Live Stream).
