Ducks Win 12th in a Row
04/29/23 | Softball
BERKELEY, Calif. – It took hits from all nine starters and clutch pitching down the stretch for No. 14 Oregon to win its 12th consecutive game by defeating California, 5-3, Saturday at Levine-Fricke Field.
More importantly, Oregon took over sole possession of third in the Pac-12 and moved to within a half game of second place Washington in the standings with four games to play.
The Ducks (34-11, 13-7) jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four innings before Cal (31-16-1, 7-12-1) tightened things up with a three-run fifth. But relievers Raegan Breedlove and Morgan Scott shut down the Bears over the final two innings, allowing just one hit to preserve the victory.
"We're a very competitive team so even when (Cal) did get those runs, we immediately came together and it was like 'we got this. We're still in this. We're still going to win'," said KK Humphreys, who homered for the second straight game. "I think just the confidence – we feel it in each other."

How It Happened: Oregon used small ball to score its first run of the game in the second inning. Kedre Luschar singled and stole second base. Tehya Bird then doubled off the wall in center to score Luschar.
Humphreys made it 3-0 in the third inning with her seventh home run of the season. With Ariel Carlson at first, Humphreys pulled a 2-0 pitch high over the wall in left field. She had a solo shot to right center in Friday's game.
Paige Sinicki made it 4-0 with a line drive home run to left leading off the fourth inning. It was her second homer of the year.
Later in the fourth, the Ducks again used small ball to add another run. Kai Luschar legged out an infield single and then stole second. She scored on Allee Bunker's single to right field for a 5-0 lead.

Stevie Hansen allowed just one hit in her first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. After Cal got on the board following a walk and back-to-back doubles, Breedlove relieved Hansen and gave up runs on a single, an error and a wild pitch. But she got Cal's leading hitter, Makena Smith, to foul out to Bunker to end the inning with the Ducks holding a 5-3 lead.
The Bears could have scored more in the bottom of the fifth but the Ducks caught Kennedy Thomas, who doubled in Cal's first run, in an 8-6-5-4 rundown for the second out of the inning.
Breedlove struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth before yielding a two-out single. Scott took over for the final out in the sixth and set the side down in order in the seventh for her Pac-12-best sixth save of the season.
Hansen improved to 18-4 on the year by allowing two runs on three hits in 4.2 innings.
Notable: Oregon's 12-game winning streak is its longest since winning 15 straight between March 6-April 1, 2021 … The Ducks' eight-game Pac-12 winning streak is the program's longest since winning 12 league games in a row in 2018 … Oregon has scored at least four runs in all 12 games of its current winning streak … The Ducks have exceeded last season's victory total (33) … Bunker and Kedre Luschar both had two hits Friday while the rest of the starting lineup – Kai Luschar, Terra McGowan, Carlson, Humphreys, Bird, Sinicki and Kyla Morris – each had one … The Ducks turned their 19th double play of the season in the first inning … McGowan threw out her 10th runner of the season … After an 11-game streak earlier in the season, Hansen has now won her last six decisions in a row.

Hitting Streak Continues for McGowan
McGowan singled in the third inning to extend her hitting streak to a career-best nine games. During that span, she is batting .464 (13-of-28) with three doubles a home run and 11 RBI.
Bunker Hits Double Digit RBIs on Road Trip
Bunker's RBI in the fourth gave her 10 RBI on the current road trip and a career-best 51 on the season. She also increased her batting average on the year to .412.
Pac-12 Tournament Implications
With their win today, the Ducks can be no lower than the No. 5 seed for next week's Pac-12 Tournament and could finish as high as second. Oregon moved a game ahead of Utah (12-8), which lost 10-1 to UCLA on Friday, and Stanford (12-8). The Ducks (13-7) are half a game behind Washington (14-7) for second place. The Ducks and Utes finish the regular season with a three-game series at Jane Sanders Stadium next week.
Up Next: Oregon will go for the sweep of the series at Cal Sunday at 12 p.m. (Pac-12 Live Stream).
