Ross Posts NCAA Leader in the Shot Put
04/08/23 | Track and Field
Jaida Ross (18.49m/60-8) also extended her own school record in the event.
EUGENE, Ore. – With the first outdoor 60-foot measure in program history, Jaida Ross extended her UO record in the shot put Saturday evening at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. She recorded a best of 18.49m/60-8 which also doubles as the current leader in the NCAA.
Saturday's schedule of events also featured a win for Harrison Canfield in the pole vault at the Boyman Memorial Invitational in McMinnville, Ore.
Ross entered the day with a previous outdoor best of 17.83 meters from last year's NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark. She tallied four measures beyond that Saturday including the new school record on her final attempt of the day. The 18.49m/60-8 also becomes Ross' absolute lifetime best, surpassing the 18.23m/59-9.75 from this past indoor season.
With Saturday's effort, Ross takes over the NCAA lead and moves into a tie for the No. 19 performer in collegiate history. Ross finished second in Saturday's competition and first among collegians, just off the winning mark of 18.51m/60-8.75 by professional athlete Zhang Linru.
Mine De Klerk, also competing in the invitational section of the shot put, posted a season-best mark of 16.29m/53-5.5 to finish in eighth place Saturday. She added nearly two feet to last week's toss from the Stanford Invitational.
The UO men had a 1-2 finish in the pole vault at the Jenn Boyman Invitational with Canfield and Hunter Angove. Both cleared 4.85m/15-11—a season best for Canfield—but the Lake Oswego native took first with fewer misses during the competition.
In the first result of the day, Mason Strunk finished fifth overall and third among collegiate entries in the invitational section of the hammer. He had a day's best of 62.96m/206-6 on the fourth round in La Jolla.
