Bunker Reaches Homer Mark in Loss
05/06/23 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – Allee Bunker hit an historic home run and Terra McGowan also hit one out, but it wasn't enough as No. 13 Oregon fell to No 24 Utah, 8-2, Saturday in front of 2,000 at Jane Sanders Stadium.
Bunker's home run, which came with one out in the bottom of the seventh, was her 10th of the season. That makes her the only player in the nation to hit 10 or more home runs while striking out seven times or fewer each of the last three seasons.
The Ducks (35-13) will enter the final day of the regular season tied with Utah (33-13) and Saturday night's loser in the Washington-Stanford game for third in the Pac-12 at 14-9. Oregon could finish as high as the No. 3 seed for next week's Pac-12 tournament, pending the outcome of Sunday games in Eugene and Palo Alto, where Stanford is hosting Washington.
The Ducks and Utes wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 2 p.m.
"I think we just keep playing, we just have to keep playing," said coach Melyssa Lombardi. "We just have to work through it and I think we will. I'm confident in this team and I'm confident in everything that we've done all year long and my money is on us."

How It Happened: It was a pitching duel between Stevie Hansen and Utah's Sarah Ladd for the early part of the game.
Oregon loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but couldn't push a run across against Ladd.
Hansen was nearly equal to the task. The only runs she allowed through the first five innings came on a two-run homer in the top of the third.
McGowan cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to straightaway field on a 3-2 pitch. It was her team-leading 12th home run of the season.
"I was seeing it well," said McGowan. "I just wanted to make sure that I was on time when I got the pitch."
But the Utes answered with a home run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-1 and added on five more runs in the top of the seventh.
Hitting Streak Continues for McGowan
McGowan's home run extend her hitting streak to a career-best 12 games. During that span, she is batting .444 (16-of-36) with four doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI.

Notable: All 14 runs in the first two games in the series have come via the long ball … Bunker went 2-for-3 to raise her season average to .416 … Hansen (18-5) had her six-game winning streak snapped … Saturday was Bark in the Park day at Jane Sanders Stadium and there were nearly 50 four-legged fans in attendance.

"I think they've done a good job executing these past few days. I think for us we've just had opportunities and have missed on our opportunities."
Up Next: Oregon and Utah wrap up their series Sunday at 2 p.m. Saturday (Pac-12 Network).
