Ducks fall in series finale to USC
05/07/23 | Baseball
A six-run two-out rally by the Trojans in the second and a four-run flurry in the fourth kept Sunday's contest out of reach for the Ducks.
How it Happened: USC (27-20-1, 13-11 Pac-12) worked into an early 6-0 lead following a second inning where seven Trojans reached base.
Oregon (31-16, 14-10 Pac-12) broke its scoring drought in the top of the fourth to make it 6-1. With two runners on, Anson Aroz (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) smacked a double into right field to bring home Tanner Smith in the redshirt freshman's first collegiate start at catcher.
USC tacked on four more runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Drew Cowley (1-for-3, HR, RBI) and Sabin Ceballos (1-for-3, HR, RBI) hit back-to-back home runs to cut the USC advantage to seven.
After the Trojans added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, the Ducks scored one after Rikuu Nishida came around off a failed pickoff attempt to make it an 11-4 contest.
Box Score Notes: Smith moved into first in all-time starts at Oregon with No. 230 on Sunday, breaking the record previously held by J.J. Altobelli (2010-2013) … The Ducks matched a program record of 17 consecutive games with a home run, totaling 36 in the stretch … After the 19th stolen base of the season for Nishida in the first, the Osaka, Japan native broke Don Banderas' single-season stolen base record of 18 set in 1965 … The home runs from Cowley and Ceballos were the team-leading 13th for each this season, moving the pair into a tie for the sixth most in a single season in UO history … Aroz recorded the second multi-hit game of his career … Drew Smith now has a hit in each of his eight career starts … Colby Shade finished Sunday's game with his 14th multi-hit game of the season and 35th overall.
On Deck: The Ducks return to PK Park for a weekend Pac-12 series against Washington, beginning on Friday, May 12 (7:00 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Networks).
