08/31/23 | Women's Volleyball
No. 6 Oregon hit .333 or higher for the third time in four matches.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The sixth-ranked Oregon volleyball team registered a 3-1 win (25-19, 25-15, 22-25, 25-10) over weekend host San Diego State Thursday night in the opening match of the SDSU Invitational. Mimi Colyer posted her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs and the UO offense generated a .333 hitting percentage.
With the result, the Ducks improve to 4-0 and have now hit .333 or higher in three of four matches this season. Hannah Pukis dished out 43 assists and had four hitters with at least seven kills. Gabby Gonzales had a season-high 12 kills and Morgan Lewis and Karson Bacon tallied nine and seven kills, respectively. Lewis hit .438 (9-2-16) against San Diego State.
Bacon also had a match high six blocks while Daley McClellan was second on the team with nine digs in the match. Oregon out-blocked SDSU, 10-6, and held the Aztecs to a -.071 hitting efficiency in the fourth set.
How It Happened
With the score tied at 13-all in the first set, the Ducks created separation on the scoreboard with four points in a row. Gonzales served up an ace for the 17-13 lead, and later in the set, put down a kill for a 21-16 advantage that forced an SDSU timeout. After a service error gifted Oregon a set point at 24-19, Gonzales delivered another ace on the next point to close out the frame.
The visitor wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in the second, taking a 10-4 on the heels of a solo block by Colby Neal and a kill by Gonzales. San Diego State pulled to within three—UO leading 15-12—but the Ducks rattled off seven of the next eight points to extend the lead. Noemie Glover, in the first appearance of her career, gave Oregon set point at 24-14 with her first kill.
San Diego State (1-3) saved one set point but sent a serve into the net to give the Ducks the 2-0 lead at the break.
Toward the end of the third, the Aztecs put together a 6-1 run to take a 22-19 advantage. Oregon was within two points after back-to-back kills by Gonzales and Colyer but SDSU went on to the set win, the Ducks' first set loss of the season.
Similar to the second, Oregon wasted little time in re-establishing control of play and went up 10-4 with consecutive kills from Bacon and Gonzales. The home team got no closer than five for the remainder of the match. Back-to-back SDSU attack errors gave UO its first double-digit lead at 16-6 and later, Colyer found the floor for a 21-9 lead and Aztecs' timeout.
Gonzales followed with her final kill of the match and Colyer tallied back-to-back aces for a handful of match points at 24-9. A kill by the Aztecs' Mikela Labno extended the match by a point but Bacon and Pukis teamed up for a block, and the final tally of the match.
Notable
Neal made her first start of the season and had five kills (.571) and three blocks in three sets…Oregon had a season-high nine aces—Colyer (4), McClellan (3) and Gonzales (2)—while committing just three service errors
