Ducks Complete Weekend Sweep
01/14/24 | Women's Basketball
The Oregon women made clutch plays down the stretch to hold off Arizona's comeback bid and sweep the weekend at Matthew Knight Arena.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon women's basketball team swept its first homestand of conference play this season to win for the sixth straight time at Matthew Knight Arena, 70-68 over Arizona on Sunday.
With Eugene covered in a layer of ice following a weekend storm, the game was played with only family and friends of the participating teams in attendance. Still, the Ducks improved to 11-7 overall and 8-1 at home this season, trailing for only 14 seconds of the game while overcoming 27 turnovers to win.
Grace VanSlooten did a little of everything for the Ducks, scoring 19 points with 9-of-10 free-throw shooting, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out five assists as a complementary ballhandler against Arizona's tough defense. She helped relieve pressure off Chance Gray, as the Ducks were playing without guard Kennedi Williams as a precaution due to injury.

Phillipina Kyei finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds for her conference-best 11th double-double, Gray had 13 points with a trio of first-half three-pointers, and Sammie Wagner added two huge three-pointers in the fourth quarter to stave off Arizona's comeback bid.
Overall the Ducks shot 53.5 percent and had a 38-19 advantage in rebounds to overcome their turnovers. Their 12 offensive rebounds contributed to a 16-2 edge in second-chance points, helping overcome a 26-12 deficit in points off turnovers.
How It Happened: The tone for the day was set early for the Ducks, who shot 57.1 percent in the first quarter to overcome eight turnovers. After Arizona scored the game's opening basket, Kyei tied it at the other end, then blocked a shot before Kennedy Basham scored to put Oregon in the lead for good. Gray's first three-pointer of the game made it a 7-0 run for the Ducks, and four late points from Sarah Rambus made it 12-6 after the first quarter.

Arizona got going offensively in the second, but the Ducks shot 60 percent themselves with 11 rebounds. After the Wildcats scored back-to-back baskets to get within 18-12, Gray hit another three-pointer, and her third of the game made it 24-14. Arizona clawed back within four a few times, but Sofia Bell scored two second-chance points to put Oregon up 32-26, and Kyei closed the half with two free throws for an eight-point lead.
The offenses cooled off in the third quarter, with neither shooting 50 percent, but Oregon was again dominant on the boards — with Arizona's bigs in foul trouble, the Ducks had a 20-9 advantage in rebounds after halftime and scored 10 second-chance points. An 8-1 run by the Wildcats got them within 39-37, but the UO women responded with seven straight, including four from VanSlooten. Bell scored to close the quarter with Oregon up 50-41.

The fourth saw Arizona shoot 60 percent while Oregon shot 55.6 percent with nine turnovers — but the Ducks dominated the glass, 9-1. An 8-0 run for the visitors got them within 52-49 but Bell ended the run and then Wagner hit her first three-pointer of the period. It was 59-56 when she hit her second; both times Arizona answered with a three at the other end, the latter of which could have cost Oregon the lead if not for Wagner's clutch shooting. VanSlooten and Gray combined to go 6-for-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch, and Kyei grabbed two huge rebounds in the final minute as the Ducks hung on to win.
