Comeback Bid Comes Up Short For UO
01/28/24 | Women's Basketball
The Oregon women had a chance to make it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter against No. 3 Colorado on Sunday before falling short.
EUGENE, Ore. — A deficit that reached 21 in the first half was cut to as little as seven in the fourth quarter Sunday, before the Oregon women's comeback bid came up short in a 61-48 loss to No. 3 Colorado before 6,074 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks (11-11, 2-7 Pac-12) trailed 31-11 at halftime, but got within 50-43 in the fourth. A three-point attempt by Grace VanSlooten with 4:17 to play would have cut the deficit to four, but it was just off and the Buffaloes responded with six straight points, after the UO women had mounted a 13-2 run early in the fourth.
"That gave us a little energy; we just needed to get some crucial stops and we didn't, and they went on a run back," said VanSlooten, who returned from concussion protocol to lead the Ducks with 16 points Sunday.
Phillipina Kyei added 12 points with 17 rebounds and Chance Gray scored 13 for Oregon, which was outscored 18-3 in the second quarter. Two days after holding high-powered Utah to 58 points on 34.9 percent shooting, the Ducks held the Buffs to 31.6 percent shooting Sunday. But they couldn't produce enough offense in either game to come away with an upset.
"I was really proud of the team, how we competed in the second half," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "We've just got to do that from the get-go."

How It Happened: VanSlooten scored six of Oregon's first eight points, including a layup with 3:59 left in the first quarter that gave the Ducks an 8-7 lead. But Colorado scored the last six points of the period, momentum that continued into the second.
The Buffs scored seven straight to open the second quarter, then had an 11-0 run later in the period. The Ducks were 0-of-10 from the floor in the quarter.
"This whole weekend, defensively we played well enough to at least compete and be close and win these games," Graves said. "We just don't have enough firepower offensively. It's a struggle, it's a grind to score. … We've got to find some answers."
Kennedy Basham ended Oregon's cold stretch with a jumper to open scoring in the second half. Four free throws from Gray got Oregon within 36-20, and Kyei cut the deficit to 15 twice late in the period with baskets in the paint.

It was 48-30 in the fourth when the Ducks scored 11 straight, on two baskets each from Kyei and VanSlooten and a three-pointer by Ula Chamberlin. After the teams traded baskets, a miss by Colorado gave Oregon an opportunity to cut the deficit further, but a runner by Gray and VanSlooten's three were just off.
Gray hit a three with just over a minute left, just the second three-pointer of the game to fall for Oregon.
