Ducks Finish Off Sweep of Seattle
03/30/24 | Baseball
The win gave the Ducks (19-7) a four-game sweep over the Redhawks and Oregon's eighth win in its last nine games. Neville drove in four runs while going 1-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Meggers had three RBI while finishing 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Molony tallied three hits for the third consecutive game finishing 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and a run scored.
How It Happened: Seattle (7-20) jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind two home runs in the second inning, while also taking a 4-2 lead in the fifth before the Oregon offense got hot.
After Seattle put three on the board in the second, the Ducks answered with two runs of their own in the inning. Bennett Thompson led off the inning with a hit and moved to third on a Drew Smith double before scoring on a Neville sacrifice fly. Carter Garate made it a one-run game with a RBI single scoring Smith.
SU pushed the lead back to two with a run in the fifth but Oregon quickly answered with two runs in its half of the inning to tie the game. Meggers came up big in that inning driving in a run with a two-out double before scoring on a Jacob Walsh single to tie the game.
Oregon finally took the lead in the sixth scoring three runs in the sixth inning before adding another one in the seventh. Neville gave Oregon its first lead blasting a two-run home run onto the roof of the hitting facility beyond the right-field wall. The Ducks would tack on another in the sixth after Molony singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on a Meggers sacrifice fly.
After Oregon built the lead to four in the seventh on a Thompson double and Smith RBI single, Seattle scored three in the eighth to pull within one and had the bases loaded with one out. Oregon reliever Bradley Mullan enticed a ground ball to Garate at third who stepped on the bag and threw to first to complete the inning-ending double play.
Oregon put the game away in the bottom half of the inning scoring six runs. Megger made it a two-run game blasting his first career home run to lead off the inning. Walsh singled and Oregon tacked on two more runs when Seattle pitchers proceeded to go walk, hit-by-pitch, walk and walk. Molony broke the string of free passes lacing a double into the left-field corner that scored all three runners on base.
Box Score Notes: Kevin Seitter moved to 3-1 after allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings with eight Ks … Mullan picked up his second save … Eight of Oregon's nine starters had at least one hit, while all nine reached base … In the series, Molony was retired just twice in his 14 plate appearances … His three hits marked the third consecutive game in the series that he had three hits … Smith (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 R, BB) reached base four times.
On Deck: The Ducks hit the road for their next four games starting with a midweek contest at Portland on Tuesday with a 5:35 p.m. first pitch.
Quotes:
Head Coach Mark Wasikowski
Overall thoughts on the win and sweep…
"Good. We won four straight games. That was the goal. Good start by Kevin (Seitter). Brad (Mullan) finished the game really well. There were a lot of solid offensive performances, so it was nice to see the sustained attack offensively."
Seitter tossing 6.2 innings…
"It was huge. When you are on Game four of a series you need your starter to get out there and a lot of starters in that situation may have crumbled or folded. He wanted to stay in the game when we took him out and we felt like that was the right thing to do at the time. Cole Stokes came in, and put out the fire. I'm happy about what we saw."
Chase Meggers
Overall thoughts on first career homer…
"It felt great. Bombs always feel good especially left on left. It felt really good especially when the game is close and I'm trying just to get on for the team and give a plus at bat. When the game is close like that and you go up by two it felt really good."
Getting back on the success train…
"It feels good. Your ups and downs can really go. You can be hot and sometimes you can be really cold. For me, it was just working my butt off in the cage. (Coach Jack) Marder and I worked on some stuff and I was talking to him today. I was freeing myself up. Felt like I was going up and down rather than going too far forward and losing my posture. That felt really good today and I just need to keep building on it and keep working."
Kevin Seitter
On pregame visualization...
"Thats exactly right. Visualization is a huge part of our program, and I think that any good pitcher should go and do that. Hawk spent some time playing with the Dodgers and a couple of Major League organizations, and he mentioned that Clayton Kershaw would do that all the time. So, I've just tried to add that to my repertoire every week, and it's super beneficial.
On what worked well today...
"I had a lot of my stuff. Fastball, curveball, slider. It was a good mix, but just battling out there was the main thing. We were trying to come back, obviously I started a lot of the batters down 1-0, 2-0. Just being able to use my fastball in key situations was big time."
Mason Neville
On hitting improvements over the last few games...
"I feel like I'm getting better. I think there is room for improvement for sure. But yeah, I'm starting to find my rhythm and kind of getting a groove a little bit. But I can't get complacent, I feel like there's always room for improvement."
On moving to left field...
"It's different. I mean, I've played outfield for a while now, but it's just different angles off the bat. I feel like I should have made a couple plays out there this past weekend that I didn't, so I'll be working out there more in practice."
