Ducks Fall to UCLA in 10 Innings
04/06/24 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Oregon rallied from a two-run deficit at UCLA on Saturday to force extra innings but the Bruins scored the winning run in the 10th on a bases loaded-walk to even the Pac-12 Conference series with a 4-3 win at Jackie Robinson Field.
After giving up three runs in the first three innings, Oregon's pitching staff held UCLA (12-16, 5-9 Pac-12) scoreless for the next six innings.
After Oregon (21-8, 7-4 Pac-12) went 1-2-3 in the top of the 10th, the Bruins put the first two runners on in the bottom half of the inning off reliever Ryan Featherston.
Featherston, who held UCLA scoreless from the sixth through the ninth innings while retiring 12 of the 13 batters he faced, gave up a leadoff single in the 10th. The next batter attempted to sacrifice, but Featherston slipped while attempting to field the bunt, putting runners on first and second.
Featherston (1-1) struck out the next batter before a walk loaded the bases for the Bruins' best hitter, Duce Gourson. Featherston fanned Gourson before being relieved by left-hander Bradley Mullan with UCLA left-handed hitter JonJon Vaughns due up. UCLA countered with a Quintt Landis, a right-handed pinch hitter, and he drew a six-pitch walk on a 3-2 count for the win.
How It Happened: Bryce Boettcher gave Oregon an early lead lining the third pitch of the game over the left-field wall and a 1-0 first-inning lead.
Oregon starter Grayson Grinsell struggled early walking four in the first three innings and hitting another batter. UCLA made him pay for it scoring one run in the second and two more in the third, with two of those three runs coming after the Bruins reached on walks.
Oregon came back to tie it in the fifth thanks to some help from the UCLA defense. After Boettcher reached on a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a Bennett Thompson single, Boettcher scored when UCLA left fielder Payton Brennan misplayed a fly ball to left field. Thompson, who moved to second on Brennan's error and to third on a Jeffery Heard fly out, tied the game when he scampered home on a UCLA passed ball.
Box Score Notes: Boettcher's home run was the fourth leadoff homer of the season for Oregon, with Justin Cassella hitting the other three … Oregon dropped to 2-1 in extra-inning games … The two teams combined for nine hits … Cassella missed his fifth consecutive game after leaving game two of the Seattle series early.
On Deck: The rubber match between the Ducks and Bruins is Sunday with a 12:05 p.m. first pitch.
