No. 12 Oregon improves to 5-1 with Friday's five-set victory over No. 17 BYU in San Diego.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The No. 12 Oregon volleyball team picked up a top-20 win Friday evening with a five-set victory (25-14, 23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 17-15) over No. 17 BYU at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego. Leading a quartet of Ducks in double figures, Onye Ofoegbu had 13 kills coupled with her .545 hitting percentage.
Michelle Ohwobete registered 12 kills and a match-high 16 digs for her second double-double of the season, and tallied a career-best nine blocks to finish one stuff shy of a triple-double. Collectively, the Ducks posted 13 service aces and 20.0 total team blocks, both season-high figures.
Noemie Glover and Mimi Colyer had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, against BYU. Colyer also picked up a double-double with 12 digs and added five aces in the five-set thriller. Ofoegbu and Colby Neal each registered eight blocks.
How It Happened: In the nail-biting fifth set, Oregon (5-1) had an 8-5 advantage at the switch and was up 10-7 after an Ohwobete ace which forced a BYU timeout. The Cougars came out of the huddle with five of the next six points for a 12-11 lead, its first of the frame. At 13-all, the teams exchanged service errors, the second of which erased an Oregon match point.
BYU won the next rally to arrive at match point but Ofoegbu answered with her 13th and final kill of the match to extend play and tie the score at 15-all. Serving sub Maya De Los Reyes delivered her second ace to give Oregon another match point and after a BYU error and ensuing unsuccessful challenge, the Ducks had its second five-set victory of the season.
During a mid-set surge in the first, the Ducks turned a two-point lead into an 18-11 advantage. Oregon got kills from four different players during that stretch and forced BYU to call both timeouts. Ofoegbu put down a kill to bring the Ducks to set point and Colyer finished it off on the next rally with her sixth kill of the opening frame.
The team hit .480 in the first set on its way to the 1-0 match lead.
BYU (4-3) led through the early stages of the second frame and went up 14-11 before an Ofoegbu kill and back-to-back aces by Colyer tied the score. The Cougars answered with a five-point run to regain their advantage, leading 19-14 with an ace by Claire Little. The Ducks went on to save three set points before BYU got the final tally to pull even on the match scoreboard.
Little paced the Cougars and led all players with 17 kills.
Oregon and BYU exchanged third and fourth sets, respectively. The Ducks were up 13-12 in set three and rattled off 12 of the next 13 points to take a 2-1 overall lead. In the tightly contested fourth, the score was tied at 19, 20, 21 and 22 before BYU ran off with the final three points to force the fifth.
