Ofoegbu Earns Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week
09/23/24 | Women's Volleyball
The Cerritos, Calif., native averaged 3.92 points per set and 2.17 blocks per set last week.
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week as announced Monday by the conference office. It is the program's first weekly accolade as a member of the Big Ten Conference.
In a pair of straight-set wins last week, Ofoegbu averaged 3.92 points per set, 2.67 kills per set and 2.17 blocks per set. The Cerritos, Calif., native reached 400 career blocks in Sunday's win over Oregon State, and helped the Ducks hold last week's opponents to a collective .044 hitting percentage.
Ofoegbu finished the week with 13.0 total blocks, five against Portland State followed by a season-high eight against Oregon State. Through the first four weeks of the season, Ofoegbu ranks fifth in the league and 32nd nationally with 1.38 blocks per set. She has at least five blocks in four of the past five matches.
Just as imposing offensively, Ofoegbu tallied eight kills in each of the team's matches last week with just one error. She hit .682 (16-1-22), pushing her season hitting percentage to .490 which is good for second in the Big Ten and sixth in the NCAA entering conference play.
Monday's announcement marks the third-career weekly award for Ofoegbu, and first as a Duck. During her career at UC Irvine (2019-22), she was a two-time Big West Offensive Player of the Week selection.
Oregon (8-1) starts Big Ten play this weekend, hosting Illinois and Indiana at Matthew Knight Arena. In the latest AVCA poll, the Ducks are up a spot to No. 11 in the country.
