Ducks Open Season with Pair of Sweeps
01/17/25 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon women's tennis team opened its 2025 spring season with a pair of sweeps at the Student Tennis Center Friday, beginning the day with a 4-0 win over Portland State and later defeating Montana by the same score in the afternoon.
The Ducks started each match strong, winning five of the six doubles matches on the day to jump out to 1-0 leads in both contests. UO used five different pairings over the two matches, with Patsy Daughters and Karin Young teaming up in both matches at the top spot in the lineup and finishing the day unbeaten.
"We came out for our first match of the season with some nerves," said UO head coach Courtney Nagle. "First match of the season, that usually happens. We worked through that pretty well. It was great to get the doubles point in both matches, and that energy carried over into the singles."
Daughters was one of four Duck freshmen to see action Friday, as she went a combined 4-0 over singles and doubles. A freshman duo of Bridget Mihulka and Juliet Santitto won their match in the third position against Montana. Freshman Avery Jennings and Sophomore Julia Visaya also won at No. 3 doubles in the day's first match against PSU.
Success continued through singles, with the Ducks clinching the first three singles decisions in each contest. Sophomore Tilde Jagare, like Daughters, went 2-0 in singles on the day while winning both in straight sets. Jagare played at No. 4 singles against the Vikings and at the fifth position against the Grizzlies.
Oregon's sole senior, Karin Young won the deciding singles points against PSU on court two, with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. It marked Young's highest position in the lineup in her UO career.
Oregon carried momentum through the second match of the day, with Mihulka and Santitto picking up their first collegiate doubles with a 6-0 score against Grace Haugen and Rosie Sterk on court three.
Against Montana, Candela Aparisi was first off the court in singles with a straight set win over Rosie Sterk on court four. Daughters' second straight-set win of the day clinched Oregon's second win of the day, as she eased by Piper Freeman 6-1, 6-0.
"I think we have a really supportive team," said Daughters, a Eugene native. "They rallied around each other, and we played some good tennis. I look forward to improving with each match and I think we're just going to keep getting better."
The Ducks return to the Student Tennis Center on Friday at 1 p.m. to face Seattle.
