UO Hosts 16th-Ranked Terrapins

EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon women's basketball team is back home at Matthew Knight Arena, as the Ducks begin a three-game homestand on Thursday against No. 16 Maryland at 6 p.m.
Oregon has won four of its last five games and seven of its last nine games after splitting a pair of games in the state of Michigan last week. The Ducks upended then-16th-ranked Michigan State 63-59 before falling at Michigan last Sunday.
The Ducks and Terrapins will meet for the third time in the series' history, and first time since UO ousted Maryland in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Oregon upset fourth-ranked Maryland 77-63 in the Sweet 16 to advance to its first of three straight Elite Eights.

LAST TIME OUT
After starting its road trip with a 63-59 win over No. 16 Michigan State last Thursday in East Lansing, Oregon fell at Michigan on Sunday 80-48 in Ann Arbor.
The Wolverines held the Ducks to a season-low point total while putting up the most points by any UO opponent this season. U-M shot 54 percent from the floor and 45 percent from the 3-point line compared to Oregon's 30 percent shooting and 26 percent clip from deep.
Freshman Katie Fiso and senior Phillipina Kyei led Oregon with 11 points each, with Fiso matching her career high. Kyei added eight rebounds and three assists.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
Maryland (17-5, 7-4) comes to Eugene ranked 16th in the latest Associated Press top-25 poll, as the Terrapins have spent every week this season in the top 25. Maryland began the season 14-0 and reached a ranking as high as No. 7, but has four of its last five games after a 66-65 home loss to Illinois on Sunday.
Kaylene Smikle leads her team in scoring at 17.3 points per game, with Shyanne Sellers second at 14.0 points a game and Bri McDaniel at 10.6 points per night. Both McDaniel and Sellers shoot better than 50 percent from the field. Christina Dalce averages a team-leading 8.4 rebounds a game while also putting up 8.8 points per game.
The Terrapins are ninth nationally, and second in the Big Ten, in rebounding margin at plus-10.5 per game. The Terps also rank third in the league in rebounds per game with 42.2, good for 16th in the nation. Smikle is the Big Ten's seventh-leading scorer while also ranking sixth in free throw shooting (83.1 percent).
INSIDE THE SERIES
Oregon holds a 2-0 lead over Maryland in the all-time series that started in 1983. The Ducks and Terrapins last met in the Sweet Sixteen in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, with UO upsetting No. 4 Maryland 77-63 to advance to its first of three consecutive Elite Eights. Including Thursday's game, the Terrapins have been ranked in all three meetings while the Ducks have been unranked. Thursday's game will also mark the first home game for either team, as the previous two matchups occurred at neutral sites.

Thursday's game will mark Oregon's fifth against a ranked opponent this season, with all five being ranked 16 or better. Last Thursday, the Ducks defeated then-16th-ranked Michigan State on the road 63-59 to improve its season record against top-25 teams to 2-2. The win was UO's first road win over a ranked team since defeating No. 15 Oregon State on Dec. 13, 2020, and it was the first road win over a ranked team by an unranked Oregon team since defeating No. 9 Duke in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, 74-65.
Against ranked teams this year, Deja Kelly is averaging a team-high 14.0 points per game - up from her season average of 10.1 per game - while also turning in 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Oregon has held ranked teams to just 67.0 points per game over four contests. UO is 1-1 at home against ranked teams this season, defeating then-No. 12 Baylor 76-74 before falling to sixth-ranked USC 66-53. With a win, the three ranked wins would be the most by the Ducks in a single season since winning 12 in 2019-20.
CLUTCH DUCKS
The Ducks have become accustomed to close games of late. Oregon's 50-49 comeback win over Iowa on Jan. 19 marked UO's fourth victory by two points or less this season, as the Ducks are unbeaten in those games this season. Oregon trailed by 10 points at half and by as many as 15 points in the first half, marking the first halftime deficit overcome for a win this season. UO followed that up with a 10-point comeback win against Indiana on Jan. 24, putting together a 10-0 run with under five minutes to play to pull off the victory.
» The four two-point victories are Oregon's most since at least 2009-10 and ties the most two-point games since 2014-15.
» Additionally, the Ducks are 5-0 in games decided by four points or less, with three of those wins coming in January.
