02/07/25 | Softball
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Home state standouts Paige Sinicki and Kedre Luschar both hit grand slams on Friday as No. 23 Oregon scored a combined 39 runs in winning twice on the opening day of the 2025 season at the UNLV Desert Classic.
Luschar, a senior from Carson City, Nev., hit her grand slam – the first home run of her career – in the top of the first as the Ducks defeated Buffalo 21-1 in the opening game on Friday. It was just the fourth time in program history that Oregon had scored 20 or more runs in a game, and was the most the Ducks have ever scored in a season-opener.
Sinicki, a senior from nearby Henderson, Nev., homered twice in the second game on Friday, including a grand slam in the fifth inning of the Ducks' 18-6 win over Southern Utah.
The Ducks also saw freshman Emma Cox homer twice against the Thunderbirds on Friday, while sophomore Katie Flannery and freshmen Stefini Ma'ake and Rylee McCoy went deep against the Bulls.
In the UO record book, the 21 runs against the Bulls trail only the 23 Oregon scored against Oregon State in 2015 and the 22 put up by the Ducks against Butte College in 1980.
The Ducks knocked out 18 hits against SUU – one shy of the school record – and had 15 against Buffalo.
"We were just passing the bat and having a lot of fun," said Sinicki. "You can see the potential in this lineup. One through nine, even one through 17, we're all just doing our job and I think it's so exciting."
How It Happened – Game 1 Oregon 21, Buffalo 1: Oregon scored six runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings in the run-rule victory.
Kai Luschar led off the game with a walk and stole second – the first of her three steals on the day. One out later, Dezianna Patmon walked before Ma'ake laced a double up the middle to score both runners. Cox singled and Sinicki walked to load the bases for Kedre Luschar, who went the opposite way over the left field wall for the grand slam.
The Ducks added three more runs in the top of the second on Ma'ake's homer to left.
"I was just trying to hit the ball to the wall," said Ma'ake. "Getting a double and a home run really means a lot."
Oregon put six more on the board in the top of the fourth. Cox got the rally going by doubling in a run. Sinicki reached on a bunt single that moved pinch-runner Elyse Kresho to third. Kresho then stole home on a delayed steal.
Kedre Luschar's second hit of the game, a single to right, scored Sinicki before Flannery's two-run home run to left. McCoy's RBI single capped the scoring for the Ducks in the fourth.
Oregon used three hits and an error for its final six runs in the fifth inning.
Ayanna Shaw singled in a run – her first RBI as a Duck – before an error by the left fielder on Kai Luschar's fly ball allowed Shaw and Abby Steffen to score.
Kaylynn Jones then singled in a run before McCoy capped the scoring with a two-run home run.
Kedre Luschar drove in a career-high five runs against the Bulls, while Ma'ake also drove in five runs.
Starter Lyndsey Grein went 3.1 innings and struck out four for the win.
How It Happened – Game 2 Oregon 18 Southern Utah 6: Oregon trailed 4-0 after the first inning but scored seven times in the third to take the lead and then plated eight runs in the fifth to put the game away.
Cox and Sinicki led off the second inning with back-to-back home runs, cutting the Thunderbirds' lead to 4-2.
After SUU scored a run in the bottom of the second to make it 5-2, Oregon used five hits and four walks to take the lead in the third.
Patmon reached on a base-on-balls and scored on Ma'ake's double up the middle to make it a 5-3 game. Cox pulled the Ducks another run closer with an RBI single.
Sinicki then reached on a bunt that pushed Cox to third. Kedre Luschar tied the game at 5-5 on a squeeze bunt that scored Cox.
Flannery put the Ducks in front for good, 6-5, with an RBI single to score Sinicki. Kai Luschar and Patmon drew bases-loaded walks around Jones' RBI single that made it 9-5.
The Thunderbirds scored a run in the bottom of the third but Cox answered for the Ducks in the top of the fourth with her second home run of the game to make it 10-6.
Oregon closed out the game with an eight run fifth inning.
Jones walked, Patmon singled and Ma'ake reached on a bunt base hit to load the bases for Cox, who scored Jones on a sharp single to right, leaving the bases loaded for Sinicki.
The 2024 Gold Glove shortstop hit a drive out right center for her first career grand slam, making it 14-6.
"I didn't even know the bases were loaded," said Sinicki. "Coming around to home plate, it was just cool to see all the fans and my family. It just means a lot being back home and back to my roots where everything started."
The Ducks again loaded the bases on singles by Kedre Luschar and Shaw and a walk to Flannery. Kai Luschar singled into right to score both Flannery and Kedre Luschar.
Patmon's sacrifice fly rounded out the scoring for the Ducks.
Staci Chambers struck out the last six batters she faced and nine overall nine in 3.2 innings in relief to earn the win.
