03/07/25 | Women's Tennis
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Friday's match between Oregon and 74th-ranked Rutgers, the Big Ten opener for both teams, came down to the third set of the final singles match of the day, with the Scarlet Knights squeaking by the Ducks 4-3 at East Brunswick Racquet Club.
After dropping the doubles points to start the day, Oregon (7-3, 0-1) won the first three singles matches to go in front 3-1. Rutgers (7-2, 1-0) responded by claiming the next two team points, including a three-set win, to even the match at 3-3.
The only match that remained was at No. 4 between UO's Patsy Daughters and RU's Karina Jumazhanova. Jamazhanova won the first set, 6-2, before Daughters fought back to win the second set, 7-5. The UO freshman battled, but ultimately fell 6-4 in the match's decisive third set.
Tilde Jagare, Bridget Mihulka and Karin Young each picked up points for the Ducks with their straight-set victories during singles play. Jagare, playing at No. 3, remained unbeaten this spring with her 6-4, 6-3 win to improve to a team-best 8-0.
Mihulka improved to 4-1 when playing at the sixth spot in the lineup while Young, playing at No. 2, collected her third straight win with her 6-3, 6-2 victory.
The Ducks failed to earn the doubles points for just the third time in 10 dual matches, falling at both Nos. 1 and 3.
Rutgers marked UO's second ranked opponent it has faced this season, with the Ducks going 0-2 against ranked teams. Through 10 spring matches, Oregon's doubles teams are a combined 17-10, while boasting a 32-17 singles mark.
The Ducks finish their two-match road trip at Maryland on Sunday (9 a.m. PT).
