McCoy Hits Freshman Record 15th Home Run in Win
04/26/25 | Softball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — No. 5 Oregon started fast by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning while Rylee McCoy broke the school's freshman home run record as the Ducks downed Indiana, 9-1 in six innings, Saturday at Andy Mohr Field.
Oregon has now won all seven Big Ten series this season and at 16-2 in the league, has a game-and-a-half lead for first over No. 7 UCLA with four to play.
The Ducks' 43-5 overall record is tied with the 2014 and 2015 teams for the best record in program history. Both of those teams won the Pac-12 and advanced to the Women's College World Series.
How It Happened: The Ducks scored five runs on six hits in the top of the first inning. After Paige Sinicki singled and Kedre Luschar walked, McCoy singled back up the middle to score Sinicki.
With two outs, Emma Cox doubled into the right field to bring Luschar and McCoy home and Oregon led 3-0.
"I was just trying to do whatever to get on base and not let the pitcher beat me," said Cox, who also doubled in the third for the first two-double game of her career.
Kaylynn Jones followed with a single off the pitcher and then Braiesey Rosa hit Oregon's second two-RBI double of the inning to give the Ducks a 5-0 lead before the Hoosiers had a chance to bat.
The Ducks added three more runs in the fourth inning.
Kai Luschar reached on an error and Sinicki and Kedre Luschar followed with the singles, the latter of which brought Kai Luschar home from third.
McCoy then drove in her second run of the game on a sacrifice fly that scored Sinicki. Kedre Luschar tagged and went to third on the play and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0 Ducks.
After the Hoosiers (30-15, 8-10) scored a run in the bottom of the of fifth, McCoy went the opposite way to right field to break the UO freshman home run record of 14 set by Jenn Salling in 2007 with her 15th bomb of the year.
"Honestly I didn't know it was happening and all my teammates were congratulating me so I figured it out," said McCoy of setting the record. "It felt amazing and I'm honestly just proud of the team allowing me to be in the position I'm in.
"I got a high outside ball and I just went with it. I saw (Indiana's pitcher) the night before and didn't get what I wanted so knowing my game plan and seeing the ball I wanted to hit, I just went for it."
That was more than enough for the Oregon pitching staff as three Ducks limited the Hoosiers to one run on six hits.
Lyndsey Grein started the game for the Ducks and struck out two in the first inning. Staci Chambers relieved and pitched the second inning, also striking out two batters.
Elise Sokolsky came on in the third inning and went 2.1 innings to improve to 12-2 on the season. Grein reentered the game in the fifth inning and closed things out by striking out three more batters in the fifth and sixth innings, giving her five for the game.
"I trust our pitchers whole-heartedly," said Cox. "I love our pitching staff and I love how they work in unison. They just did a great job passing the ball today."
Notable: Sinicki made her 177th straight start at shortstop … Kai Luschar is 5-for-7 in the Indiana series and has reached base eight times in 10 plate appearances.
Quotable:
Catcher Emma Cox on the team's start fast mentality
"In the fall, we noticed that we just kind of tip-toed our way into some things. So we wanted to make it part of our identity as a team to start fast no matter who's on the other side."
Up Next: The Ducks and Indiana will conclude their series Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time (B1G+).
