Third Top-10 Win For Acrobatics and Tumbling
03/15/26 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
Oregon wasn't perfect Sunday, but the No. 2 Ducks still posted a win over No. 4 Iona.
EUGENE, Ore. — Two seemingly contrary things can be true at the same time, and the Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team certainly found that to be the case Sunday at Matthew Knight Arena.
No, the Ducks weren't particularly clean, giving them much to work on before they take the mat next, March 25 in Honolulu. But in the end, the No. 2 UO women were celebrating their third win of the season over a top-10 team, 268.105-265.210 over visiting No. 4 Iona.
"I told the team right out of the gates, like, we got the win — let's be happy with that," UO coach Taylor Susnara said. "But at the end of the day, we've had way too many times where we win the meet because the other team messes up, not because we executed. And so next week, going into Hawaii, we're really trying to be consistent, execute, so that way we can feel really happy and proud after the meet."
The Ducks (4-1) still had much to be proud of Sunday. The duo of Cassidy Cu and Angelica Martin provided big points in two different heats of the acro event. And as usual, the tumbling event was a strength for Oregon, with the UO women dominating that event, 57.025-52.150, to bring themselves back from a deficit and take the lead into the team event that closed the meet.
"So timely," Susnara said of the tumblers. "So happy with how they executed and really turned it around. Being down going into that can be a little bit stressful. And I think that everyone did a really good job boosting each other up. …
"I think in tumbling event, a lot of those people for us are high competitors, and they do very consistent things in practice. And so, just trying to mold the rest of the team into that."
How It Happened: The Ducks had the lead early, winning the compulsory event, 38-25-37.55. That included a 9.950 for Oregon in the toss heat, featuring the quintets of Ashlyn Parlett, Emily Rezner, Kamryn Horiuchi, Charlotte Lippa and Molly Dahlager; and Blessyn McMorris, Selah Bell, Ashlee Wagner, Genesis Mitchell and Angelica Martin.
Like the meet as a whole, the acro event had highs and lows for the Ducks. The six-element heat saw Oregon score 6.450. But before and after that, Cu and Martin teamed up for matching scores of 9.950 in the five-element and seven-element heats.
"We always name captains after practice or after meets," Susnara said. "And today, we actually gave it to Cassidy and Angelica because they've been so consistent and we know exactly what we're going to get from them. So when they got those two high scores, they definitely deserve the captain hat today."
Despite their excellence, the Ducks were trailing after the acro event, and were at halftime as well despite making up some ground in the pyramid event. Iona had a slight edge in the toss event, but then came tumbling, and Oregon's surge into the lead.
A couple of mistakes by Iona hurt its score, but Oregon put the pressure on with its performance. Sophia Wing and Carly Garcia started it off with a 9.450 in the duo pass, Nya Womack posted a 9.675 in the aerial pass, Morgan Willingham scored 9.800 in the six-element pass and Briya Alvarado finished it off with a 9.900 in the open pass.
"We like to say, start from score zero, don't think about the other scores," Alvarado said. "But for me, I'm focusing on myself. … I'm really grateful, very happy with the outcome today."
Oregon's comfortable margin after tumbling allowed the Ducks to hang on and win despite being slightly outpointed in the team event, 89.160-89.030.
