Incoming freshman Jaslene Massey qualified for the discus final.
EUGENE, Ore. – Rising sophomore Juan Gonzalez finished 12th at 5,000 meters on day one of the World U20 Championships at Hayward Field. Additionally, future Oregon teammates Jaslene Massey and Mia Uusorg began their busy schedules with the discus and heptathlon, respectively.
Â
Gonzalez, the USATF U20 champion in the event, crossed the finish line in 13:59.00 for the top-12 effort to close out his outdoor season. His finish is tied for the highest by an American since past UO standout Cooper Teare was 10th at the 2018 World U20 meet in Finland.
Â
Massey needed just one throw of 55.47m/182-0 to surpass the automatic qualifying mark (55.00) in the discus. The Aliso Viejo, Calif., native is also entered in the shot put which starts with qualifying Thursday morning. The finals for both events will take place during the evening session of day two beginning with the discus at 6 p.m.
Â
On day one of the heptathlon, Uusorg posted personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles (13.71) and shot put (11.33m/37-2.25). She was second overall in the 200 meters (24.27) to move into ninth overall after the first four events with 3,363 points.
