Gates spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Nebraska, where he helped develop second round draft pick Dalano Banton and All-Big Ten honoree Cam Mack.
The native of Chicago has also coached at Florida, Northwestern, Loyola Chicago, TCU, Kent State and Western Kentucky.
In five seasons at Northwestern, Gates helped the Wildcats to a pair of 20-win seasons, including the team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017. In that time, he helped recruit a pair of top-30 recruiting classes and helped develop multiple All-Big Ten honorees. Gates spent the two seasons prior at Loyola Chicago and again helped develop the program’s first all-conference selection in five years.
Gates began his coaching career at Western Kentucky in a season that saw the Hilltoppers win 29 games and reach the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Tournament. He graduated from Kent State in 2006 and was a MAC All-Academic selection. The Golden Flashes went 88-42 and made three postseason appearances with Gates on the team. He attended Brewster (N.H.) Academy before going to Kent State.
Armon and his wife Ashley have two daughters and two sons. His older brother Dennis is the head coach at the University of Missouri.
