
Volleyball Sweeps Final Day Of Tournament, Defeats Temple and James Madison

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Oregon junior Lauren Westendorf had 17 points and sophomore Kelly Russell had 10.5 to lead the University of Oregon volleyball team to its first victory of the season against Temple University at the GlaxcoSmithKline UNC Volleyball Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. Saturday afternoon. Game scores were 32-34, 30-28, 30-23, 30-22. In the nightcap, the Ducks concluded the tournament with a 3-1 victory over James Madison.Oregon (2-1) will stay on the East Coast and play at James Madison's tournament Thu.-Sat.
"I thought we made some important adjustments today and it made a big difference" Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "And there's no question that our match last night elevated the awareness of everybody of the level of play we need to play at to be successful."
Against Temple, Westendorf matched a career-high with 14 kills while junior libero Katie O'Neil led the Ducks defensively with 13 digs. Both players were named to the All-Tournament team after leading the Ducks to consecutive wins on the final day of tournament play. Oregon freshman Kristen Bitter also showed a strong presence at the net against Temple, finishing the match with five solo blocks and five block assists.
Setter Jodi Bell served up 27 assists and also tied a career-high with four service aces as the Ducks had 14 aces in the match, including three by sophomore Jaclyn Jones and two each by freshmen Erin Little and Heather Madison.
"We got a lot of kinks out after our first match," O'Neil said. "We were really in rhythm today and it showed. We were consistent with serving, passing and hitting and it all came together."
In the final match of the weekend, the Ducks defeated James Madison in four games led by Russell's 18 kills.
"Our chemistry was really there today and we improved from our first match of the season," Russell said. "Everything just seemed to come together today and our serving and passing, point scoring and play at the net was much better."
The Ducks will face James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., Thursday at 4 p.m. in the James Madison Tournament.
