Volleyball Falls In Five Games To Rutgers at Madison Invitational
09/05/03 | Women's Volleyball
Offensively and defensively the Ducks used a balanced attack with four players posting 10 or more kills and three players with 10 or more digs. Sophomore Kelly Russell and junior Lauren Westendorf led the way for the Ducks, scoring 20 and 19 points, respectively. Westendorf had a career-high 17 kills and Russell had a career-high eight blocks. Sophomore Jaclyn Jones also had a career-high with 15 kills and finished the match with 16 points.
"We have more depth at the attacking positions than we've ever had," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "We have a lot of options and we're utilizing a 10-person rotation. The one thing that does need to come around is our defense and that starts with serving. But, overall, I thought our effort was good and we competed hard in Game 4 to get ourselves back into the match."
Once again, freshmen Kristen Bitter and Heather Madison showed bright signs. Bitter had six kills and comitted no errors in 10 attempts to hit .600 while Madison came off the bench in game four and had 24 assists and 10 digs to post her first career double double. Freshman Sarah Mason also came off the bench and had 11 kills and a .391 hitting percentage.
"We really are coming together more and more as a team," Madison said. "There's a lot of little things that we can improve on, but with each match we're getting better at the technique and the flow."
Oregon concludes its East Coast swing tomorrow vs. Georgia Southern at 1:30 p.m.
