Skipper & Brown Lead Track Teams in Idaho
01/31/04 | Track and Field
NAMPA, Idaho - University of Oregon freshman Tommy Skipper and senior Amanda Brown paced the Duck track and field teams in their second indoor stop of the 2004 indoor campaign. Taking on Texas, Utah, Boise State and Eastern Oregon in the Bodybuilding.com Invite at Jacksons Track, the Duck squads combined for one NCAA automatic mark (1M), eight wins (3M/5W), 12 Pac-10 marks (6M/6W), 36 Mountain Pacific Championships marks (18M/18W) and 20 indoor personal bests (8M/12W).
Skipper exactly met the NCAA automatic mark in the pole vault with his winning final height (18-0 1/2). The mark was a new indoor best for the Sandy High School product, and may move him atop the early season collegiate rankings since LSU senior Daniel Trosclair led last week at 17-8 1/2. Washington senior and returning NCAA indoor champion Brad Walker cleared 18-4 1/2 earlier in the campaign, but his mark from the USA Pole Vault Summit is not valid for NCAA qualifying purposes.
In only his second meet as a Duck, Skipper's mark Saturday moved him into a three-way tie for fourth place on the all-time Duck list with Trevor Woods and Jay Davis, behind Olympians Kory Tarpenning (18-6 1/2) and Tom Hintnaus (18-4 1/2), and two-time World Championships veteran Piotr Buciarski (18-2 1/2).
Skipper was one of three men's winners that also included junior Leonidas Watson (long jump, 24-8 1/2) and the 4x400 relay (3:11.60). Watson's mark was 3/4 inches shy of the NCAA provisional mark (24-9 1/4), while the relay was just over a second shy of similar NCAA provisional honors (3:10.40).
On the Pac-10 scene, Skipper and Watson again earned league invites, with the latter also claiming another invite in the triple jump (second-tie, 49-10). Junior Derek Strubel also earned an invite in the triple jump (second-tie, 49-10) as did sophomores Jeff Lindsey (high jump, second, 7-0 1/2) and Matt Scherer (200, fourth, 21.41). Lindsey's mark was a collegiate best by three inches, and an inch shy of the NCAA provisional mark (7-1 1/2), and Scherer was .16 seconds shy of the NCAA provisional standard (21.25).
Other men's indoor bests came from sprinters Caleb Rexius (60, fifth, 7.11) Ryan Voge (60 hurdles, fifth, 8.88), and pole vaulters Jon Derby (third, 16-0 3/4), David Moore (fourth, 16-0 3/4) and Voge (eighth, 14-1 1/4).
For the second straight meet, senior Amanda Brown led the Duck women with a pair of wins in the long jump (19-0 3/4) and triple jump (40-4) - with both indoor personal bests.
Other UO women's winners included junior transfers Sofie Abildtrup (200, 24.39) and Bree Fuqua (shot put, 49-5), and redshirt sophomore Haripurkh Khalsa (3,000, 10:18.22). Fuqua's mark was 5 1/2 inches shy of the NCAA provisional standard (49-10 1/2) and met the Pac-10 qualifying mark. The Poulson, Mont., native Fuqua now ranks sixth all-time for the Ducks in the event in only her second meet since her transfer from Wisconsin last fall. Abildtrup was .39 seconds shy of the NCAA provisional mark (24.00) in her Duck debut, and also only .24 seconds shy of the Duck all-time top-10 list (Kelly Blair is 10th at 24.15).
Other Pac-10 qualifiers included pole vaulters Kirsten Larwin (second, 12-5 1/2) and Emily Enders (fourth, indoor best 12-5 1/2), triple jumper Clarice Hayward-Lee (second, indoor best 39-5 3/4) and shot putter Whitney Gum (fifth, indoor best 43-10 3/4).
Additional indoor personal bests came from sprinters Elisa Crumley (60, third, 8.28) and Michelle Donovan (400, third, 57.85), distance runner Eri Macdonald (800, second, 2:12.59), triple jumper Maegan Traver (third, 37-0 1/2), and weight throwers Katie Kersh (fourth, 54-1), Jill Hoxmeier (sixth, 52-4) and Whitney Gum (eighth, 46-9).
