Offense Keys Victory In 8-0 Win For No. 13 Softball

MIAMI, Fla. ? For the second consecutive day, the 13th-ranked University of Oregon softball team responded to a loss with a dominating victory, this time defeating Iowa State, 8-0, in six innings in its final game of the Florida International Tournament in Miami, Fla. The Ducks dropped a 3-0 decision to Florida Atlantic earlier in the day and finished the tournament 2-2, which is also their overall season record. Iowa State dropped to 0-2 on the year.
"It was a good way for us to finish up the tournament," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen. "We came back very strong both offensively and defensively and I'm pleased that we're going home on a positive note." Junior Ani Nyhus picked up her second victory of the season and recorded her first career shutout, limiting the Iowa State offense to two hits. The Ducks had 11 hits in the game, led by Breanne Sabol and Ashley Richards, who went 2-for-4. Richards had three RBI while Sabol added an RBI and scored two runs. Sabol finished the two-day tournament hitting .357 with two doubles to lead Oregon's offense. Freshman Suzie Barnes finished the game 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI while Beth Boskovich and freshman Kristi Leiter were each 1-for-3. Oregon's offense came on strong in the second inning as it quickly loaded the bases after Boskovich walked to lead off the inning and Leiter and freshman Kayleen Hudson each singled. Sophomore Dani Baird got her first hit of the season ? a double to deep center field that drove in Boskovich and Leiter. Sabol continued the rally with her second double of the season, which scored Hudson. Barnes followed with a perfect bunt that allowed Baird to score on the suicide squeeze and Richards extended the Ducks' lead to 6-0 with a two-RBI single down the left field line. The Ducks added two runs in the sixth inning, their eighth run by Suzie Barnes on a passed ball that ended the game. Oregon travels to Phoenix next weekend to take part in the Fiesta Bowl tournament hosted by Arizona State University.
