Team Canada Defeats 16th-Ranked Softball In Exhibition Game
03/10/04 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. ? The No. 16 University of Oregon softball played its second straight exhibition game vs. a squad of Olympians, falling 7-2 to the Canadian National Team at Howe Field Wednesday afternoon in front of 420 fans. The loss does not count towards Oregon's season record and the Ducks return to collegiate action this weekend at the UNLV Tournament.
Oregon sophomore Dani Baird ? who accounted for Oregon's only hit against a dominating Team USA last weekend ? hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to break up four scoreless innings for the Ducks. "What a great hit by Dani Baird," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "It was nice to see a little spark in our game and I thought Dani did a great job of seeing the ball."
Strong pitching combined with an onslaught of offense led the way for the Canadians as they had 10 hits and limited the Ducks to just two hits ? Baird's home run and a single by Jenn Poore in the first inning. Canada's Kaila Harris picked up the win, while Oregon sophomore Amy Harris took the loss. Team Canada to an early 3-0 in the first inning after an RBI single by Angela Lichty and a two RBI single by Kim Sarrazin that scored Lichty and Alison Bradely. The Canadians added two more runs in the third inning after a single by Lichty and a double by Bradley. Sarrazin drove in Lichty, and Bradley later scored from third when Oregon attempted to pick off Sarrazin at second base. In the fourth, Canada extended its lead to 7-0 with an RBI each by Lichty and Erin White. Baird and the Ducks pulled within 7-2 in the fifth, but were unable to score down the stretch. The Ducks will face Southern Utah at 9 a.m. PST on Friday in their opener at the UNLV Tournament.
