Malone & Skipper Lead Ducks in Home Opener
03/20/04 | Track and Field
EUGENE - The University of Oregon men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed a successful home opener Saturday in the Oregon Preview at Hayward Field.
The Duck M&W squads combined for 15 wins (8 W / 7 M), 21 Pac-10 qualifying marks (11 M / 10 W), and 12 regional marks (6 M / 6 W). Redshirt junior Sarah Malone paced the women in her first meet in a Duck uniform in nearly two years. The Newberg, Ore., native won the event by 33 feet with her second-best meet ever (first, 175-7) behind her school record from the 2002 Oregon Twilight (179-2). Malone opened with a throw of 168-5, threw her daily best on her second try, then intentionally fouled her next three tries before she passed her final attempt. "It was good to be back in green," Malone said. "It was a good first meet and hopefully there's more to come. I felt relatively quick on the runway, and we had a nice headwind that I tried to use to my advantage. I have to give credit to Coach (Lance) Deal who has really done a great job with the javelin throwers to create an atmosphere to get us ready." Malone's mark easily met the Olympic Trials B qualifying standard (164-0), and was three feet shy of the Olympic Trials A standard (178-10). The U.S. finale is scheduled for Sacramento, Calif., July 9-18. She redshirted the 2003 season because of injuries after claimed Pac-10 runner-up honors in 2001 and 2002 and All-America honors that first season. The Ducks added another throws win in the shot put courtesy of junior Bree Fuqua (first, 48-10 3/4). The Wisconsin school record made her Hayward Field debut, and won by three feet over former Duck Pac-10 scorer Mary Etter (second, 45-10). Among unattached Duck entrants, junior transfer Brittany Hinchcliffe raised her hammer personal best by more than 10 feet (first, 197-1) to win the event by 22 feet over unattached entrant Jenni Dunkin (second, 174-11). Sophomore and junior hammer transfers Megan Kriz (third, 171-7) and Katie Kersh (fourth, 170-7) added Pac-10 qualifiers equal or past the 170-7 qualifying standard. Senior Jill Hoxmeier continued the Ducks' throwing surge with a 10-foot personal best and Pac-10/Regional qualifier in the discus (second, 162-0) and trailed Etter, a two-time discus All-American, by three feet (first, 165-3). Senior Kirsten Larwin tapped a favorable tailwind in the pole vault en route to a 1 3/4 inch outdoor best in the pole vault (13-1 1/2), and easily met the Pac-10 and Regional standards of 12-5 1/2 and 12-3 1/2. Junior Hannah Moore followed in second (12-9 1/2) with a three-inch outdoor best, and her third-highest mark ever behind her last two indoor showings (13-5 and 12-11 1/2). Among other field event marks, junior triple jumper Clarice Hayward-Lee missed her winded-aided personal best by 5 1/2 inches with her second-place mark Saturday (39-4w, w:3.8) and redshirt junior Rachael Kriz was 1 1/4 inches shy of her personal best in the high jump (first, 5-6). On the track, redshirt junior Laura Harmon ran a Pac-10 qualifier in the 1,500 (first, 4:30.88) and missed her personal best from 2002 by .38 seconds (4;30.50). Redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf followed in fifth (4:38.89) with a Pac-10 qualifier in her debut thanks to a strong final-lap surge. Freshman Amanda Santana claimed the women's other win in the 400 (58.98) and was less than a quarter-second shy of her prep personal best (58.75). She won in a lean at the line over fast-closing Mariah Hanson of Willamette (59.04). On the men's side, freshman Tommy Skipper made his home debut as a Duck and won the pole vault by 1 1/2 feet with a Pac-10 and Regional qualifier(17-6 1/2). The indoor NCAA runner-up opened at 17-6 1/2, then missed his three attempts at 18-0 1/2. The Sandy, Ore., native and prep national record holder cleared the 18-foot barrier for the third time outdoors in his career after he broke the prep record last June in the Golden West Invite (18-3), and won the U.S. junior title (18-0 1/2). Indoors already in 2004, he broke Olympian Kory Tarpenning's previous school record (18-6 1/2) with the top collegiate mark in 2004 indoors or outdoors (18-8 3/4), and also cleared 18 feet indoors in his last four appearances since January 31 (18-0 1/2, 18-1 3/4, 18-8 3/4 and most recently 18-4 1/2 in the NCAA Indoor Champs last week in Fayetteville, Ark.). "I was really excited to give it my best in front of a great crowd," Skipper said. "I know things will continue to get better, and I tried to use the winds the best I could. (Even after last week's NCAA runner-up finish) I tried to come in here focused with the same type of energy. If you don't get up for all meets equally, you can get over-excited for the bigger meets, and not be ready for the ones you need to take seriously."
Another former state prep champ and freshman Mike McGrath also enjoyed an auspicious debut in the 800 (1:51.19) and kicked to a Pac-10 qualifier and one-second win. In the 1,500, junior All-American Eric Logsdon clocked a Pac-10 qualifier (3;49.77) and was less than two seconds shy of the regional mark (3:48.21). The Duck hurdlers paced sprint action with wins in the 110 and 400 hurdles courtesy of sophomore All-American Eric Mitchum (13.91w, w:2.5) and senior Pac-10 champion Brandon Holliday (51.89). Mitchum's time was just off his wind-aided best of 13.73w from the 2003 Pac-10 Champs, while Holliday's was just over a second short of his personal best from his 2002 Pac-10 victory (50.79). Sophomore transfer AK Ikwuakor followed with Pac-10 qualifiers and runner-up finishes in both events (14.66w, 52.93). In the 400, sophomore Travis Anderson added a .15-second personal best (first, 46.94), and edged unattached entrant Kedar Inico for the win (second, 47.33). Anderson's mark easily met the Pac-10 and Regional standards of 47.84 and 47.26, and rewrote his prep best of 47.09. In the 100, redshirt junior transfer and indoor long jump All-American Leonidas Watson shifted his focus to the track and won by .11 seconds (10.88, w:0.5). In the triple jump, junior Derek Strubel upped his wind-legal best 4 1/2 inches with Saturday's winner (49-10) by more than two feet to garner Pac-10 and Regional invites. Junior transfer Paul Etter posted a pair of similar qualifying nods in the hammer in his Duck home debut (third, 195-9). Sophomore Jeff Lindsey added another Pac-10 qualifier in the high jump (second, 6-8 3/4). Freshman unattached entrant and Beaverton native Brandon Tower won the discus (157-4) , and added second in the shot put (48-6 3/4) behind PSU's Shaun Straka (first, 53-7). Looking ahead, the Ducks will send their men's jump and decathlon crew to Tucson, Ariz., for the Mike Maynard Multi-Events Multi-Events Meet (Tue.-Wed., 3/23-24) and Jim Click Shootout (Sat., 3/27). The rest of the Oregon M&W will head to Stanford for the Stanford Invitational, Fri.-Sat., 3/29-30. The Ducks' next home meet is the Pepsi Team Invitational, Sat., April 10, as the Ducks will face multiple Big Ten champ Minnesota, Colorado and Washington. Oregon Preview - 3/20/04
