Amazing Comeback Lifts Softball To Victory Over Oregon State
03/26/04 | Softball
EUGENE ? What seemed improbable heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, turned into reality as the No. 17 University of Oregon softball team scored six runs to come from behind and defeat No. 16 Oregon State in the conference opener for both teams. The win marks the second time in as many seasons that the Ducks have defeated the Beavers in the Pac-10 opener as Oregon improves to 24-7 overall, 1-0 Pac-10 while Oregon State fell to 28-9, 0-1. It is the first time Oregon has won its conference opener in back-to-back seasons since 1993 and 1994.
"I can't tell you how proud I am of this performance," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I can't think of a better win than this. To score six runs in one inning against a very good Oregon State team is a huge accomplishment." As a light rain drizzled throughout the game, Oregon struggled to find its offense as it trailed the Beavers, 8-3, heading into the final inning of play. It was then that Oregon sophomore shortstop Breanne Sabol and the Ducks began to rally back. Sabol led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single that started a six-run rally for Oregon. Sabol not only started the rally, she capped it with a two-out, two-RBI single through the left side later in the inning to score Ann Marie Topps and Suzie Barnes for the winning run. Sabol was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in the win. "I already had a hit in the inning so I was feeling confident in my swing," Sabol said. "I didn't want to try and swing to hard, I just wanted to put the ball into play and score another run and hopefully two. When I saw the ball go through, I knew Suzie could score and I was just happy that we could get a Pac-10 win." The Ducks had three hits in the inning while Oregon State walked three batters and hit one to drive in three runs. Julie Jaime, who was hitting for Erin Goodell, hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the other run. Monica Hoffman (14-6), pitched just 1.2 innings, but took the loss for Oregon State after re-entering for Ta'Tyana McElroy in the seventh. Oregon junior Ani Nyhus (10-4) pitched four and two thirds innings to get the win for the Ducks. Nyhus struck out six and scattered five hits while walking none in her first conference victory. Sophomore outfielder Dani Baird finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI while freshman Kristi Leiter was 1-for-2 and sophomore Beth Boskovich and junior Ashley Richards were each 1-for-2 with two runs scored. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Hoffman walked Richards, Boskovich and Kayleen Hudson in consecutive at bats to load the bases. Baird then drove in Richards and Boskovich with a two-RBI single to right field to give Oregon the first lead of the game, 2-0. The Beavers responded in the top of the second inning, scoring six runs on five hits, including a double by Mia Longfellow and an RBI single each by Natalie Johnson and Brianne McGowan. Richards' sacrifice fly to center field to score senior Jenn Poore in the bottom of the second inning, pulled the Ducks within 6-3. The scoring continued in the top of the third as Oregon State's Adrienne Alo drove in Lisa Allen and Alana Mendoza with a blooper to center field, extending the Beavers' lead to 8-3. Neither team scored again until Oregon's six-run rally in the seventh.
