
Softball Merciless On South Florida; Wins 12-0 To Advance At NCAA Regionals

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? Second-seed Oregon used a dominating offensive and defensive performance to mercy rule No. 3 seed
Oregon had 10 hits in the game and scored a run in four of five innings, including six in the fourth. Duck pitchers Ani Nyhus and Amy Harris combined for Oregon's second shutout of the tournament and gave up just two hits. It is the Ducks' first 40-win season since 1999. "We have been waiting for this game," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We needed our offense to catch fire and that's what happened for us today. I'm so pleased with how we stepped up today both offensively and defensively and it brings back some of our confidence." Sophomore Beth Boskovich was 3-for-3 and matched her career-high with four RBI and as a team the Ducks matched their season-best 12 RBI. "I felt good out there today and had been waiting to step up," Boskovich said. "I had been struggling a little bit, but regionals is a good time to come out of it." Oregon put pressure on South Florida from the beginning, loading the bases in the first inning after two walks and a hit batter. Pitcher Leigh Ann Ellis then walked sophomore Dani Baird to score the Ducks' first run of the inning and freshman Kayleen Hudson drove in two more runs with a single to shallow left field. Junior Ashley Richards hit her second double of the tournament ? a two RBI shot in the second inning ? to extend the Ducks' lead to 5-0. Richards moved to a tie for fifth all-time for doubles in a season (13). and is five shy of the all-time record. The Ducks' offense kept going in the third as Oregon used three singles, including an RBI single by Boskovich, to score another run and take a 6-0 lead. In the fourth, South Flordia reliever Danielle Urbanik walked freshman Suzie Barnes with the bases loaded to add to Oregon's lead, 7-0 and Boskovich drove in three runs with a double to right center. Senior Heather Munson ? hitting for senior Jenn Poore ? added to the rally, scoring Erin Goodell and Boskovich with a single down the left field line and Oregon led 12-0 after four innings. Defensively, Nyhus had a perfect game going until a single by Samantha Ray with two outs in the third inning. Nyhus improved to 23-12 with her second win of the tournament while Ellis fell to 41-7 and 1-1 at the regional.
South Florida, 12-0, in five innings at the NCAA Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla., Friday afternoon. With the win, the Ducks improve to 40-19 overall this season and advance to play No. 1 seed Florida State at 9 a.m. PDT Saturday.
