Softball Run Ends With 2-0 Setback To Seminoles

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? The University of Oregon softball team's goal of making its first trip to the Women's College World Series since 1989 was stalled by top-seeded Florida State in the NCAA Regional Championship in Tallahassee, Fla., Sunday afternoon. All-American Jess van der Linden carried the Seminoles to a 2-0 must-win victory over the Ducks (42-21) in front of 818 fans at the Seminole Softball Complex.
The Ducks defeated Florida State 1-0 in the first game of the day, forcing a second meeting ? and third overall ? between the two teams. Van der Linden threw 23 consecutive innings against Oregon, dropping game one of the day to Oregon starter Ani Nyhus (25-13) before rebounding in the final game. "I'm extremely proud of this group and the way we have played," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We didn't lose because of any lack of effort. They put everything out on the line and I'm just sorry for the players that they won't have this experience this season." Nyhus, along with senior Jenn Poore, junior Ashley Richards and sophomore Beth Boskovich were all named to the all-region team. Nyhus finished the regional 4-1 and allowed just two runs in five games. Richards led the field with three doubles while Boskovich had four RBI and Poore had eight hits. "It frustrating to get so close," Poore said. "But at the same time it's exciting to see where we've come as a program. Three years ago we weren't even in this situation." With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, left fielder Natasha Jacob hit a deep fly ball to right center field to score right fielder LaShaun Davis from second base and put Florida State on the board, 1-0. The Seminoles added to their lead in the fifth inning after a throwing error put Veronica Wootson on third. Jacob's drove in her second run of the game with a shot off up the middle that bounced of pitcher Amy Harris' arm and scored a second run for Florida State.
