No. 1 Arizona Gets Revenge On No. 10 Oregon

TUCSON, Ariz. ? The top-ranked University of Arizona softball team used three home runs to defeat No. 10 Oregon, 5-0, at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz., Friday evening. The Wildcats got revenge on the Ducks ? who handed them their first conference loss two weeks ago in Eugene ? and avoided dropping the series to Oregon for the first time since 1989 en route to improving their league-leading record to 49-3 overall, 13-2 Pacific-10 Conference. With the loss, Oregon falls to 37-15 overall, 9-7.
"I thought we could have made better adjustments offensively," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We gave ourselves opportunities to score and again didn't come up with timely hits." Oregon starter Amy Harris (5-3) kept the Wildcats hitless in the first two innings, but Jackie Coburn made the first one count as she put the Arizona ahead 1-0 with a home run off the left field fence. A two-run home run by Arizona second baseman Samantha Quintero followed by a solo shot by leadoff hitter Caitlin Lowe in the fifth inning extended the Wildcats' lead to 4-0. Catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest then doubled to left field to score Autumn Champion for Arizona's fourth run of the inning. The Ducks had opportunities in the third, fourth and sixth innings, putting runners in scoring position with less than two outs, but Arizona All-American Alicia Hollowell (36-2) stepped up to the challenge, striking out six batters with runners in scoring position. Oregon freshman Suzie Barnes broke up the no-hitter with an infield single in the fifth inning while sophomore Beth Boskovich and junior Erin Goodell each added a hit. Goodell nearly scored on a single through the right side by Jenn Poore in the seventh inning, but was thrown out at the plate by Champion on a throw from left field. Oregon turned a second-inning double play to keep Arizona at bay in that inning, bringing its Pac-10 leading double play total to 26. The Ducks have had a double play in nine conference games this season and have already surpassed their season total (20) from a year ago.
