Ducks Handle Northern Colorado, Improve to 6-0
09/10/04 | Women's Volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Oregon volleyball team came away with its sixth victory of the season, defeating the University of Northern Colorado, 31-29, 31-29, 36-38, 30-23. The Ducks are now 2-0 at the Portland State Tournament and 6-0 overall.
"Our blocking and outside hitting were huge for us tonight," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "We still, however, need to lessen our total errors per game."
Senior outside hitter Lauren Westendorf once again paced Oregon's offensive attack, delivering a career-high 24 kills on 70 attempts.
Sophomore setter Heather Madison had 55 assists and five kills, while junior outside hitter Kelly Russell posted 17 kills and 15 digs.
Sophomore Sarah Mason had five services aces to go along with 17 kills.
"We played with a lot of composure," Mason said. "The team never let down. We played at one consistent level the entire night and it led to a win."
Sophomore libero Stephanie Alleman replaced injured senior Katie O'Neil and posted a team-high 17 digs. O'Neil suffered a concussion during last night's match against Portland State.
The match marked the first meeting between the two schools, with UNC making the jump from NCAA Division II to I this season.
After two matches at the Portland State Tournament, the Ducks have won six of seven games, five of their wins coming by a margin of two
points.
Oregon begins the season 6-0 for the fourth time in six seasons, the last coming in 2001.
Oregon continues action at the PSU Tourney tomorrow (Sat., Sept. 10) when they take on British Columbia at 10 a.m. and Gonzaga at 5 p.m. at the Peter W. Scott Center.
