Long Beach State Tops Softball, 4-0

LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? Oregon pitcher Amy Harris struck out eight batters, but the 25th-ranked Long Beach State University softball team capitalized on a pair of Oregon errors to defeat the 21st-ranked Ducks, 4-0, at the Las Vegas Classic Friday afternoon. Oregon falls to 9-8 overall this season while Harris' record stands at 4-3.
Oregon had runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but weren't able to cut the deficit. Lovena Chaput, Beth Boskovich, Suzie Barnes and T.J. Eadus each accounted for a hit in the game.
The 49ers scored an unearned run on a squeeze play in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Designated player Kourtnee Gervasi singled to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by catcher Brooke LeSage. Gervasi advanced to third on an Oregon error and scored when Lauren Johnson successfully bunted for the RBI.
Another unearned run coupled with a two-RBI double by first baseman Marcel Torres in the seventh inning put Long Beach State ahead 4-0 and secured its second victory of the tournament, improving the team to 11-6 overall this season. Pitcher Kourtnee Gervasi struck out eight batters and gave up three Oregon hits to improve to 6-2 on the year.
The Ducks face No. 11 Oklahoma at 4:15 p.m. this afternoon.
