The Oregon women's lacrosse team was defeated 11-9 in a hard-fought match against the University of California-Davis on Sunday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Pape Field in front of a crowd of 427.
Seven players scored for the Ducks, who are working toward the program's first win. Oregon falls to 0-4 (0-3 MPSF) while UC Davis improves to 2-1 (2-1 MPSF) on the season.
"There were definitely some times and periods that we could of brought a little more of our game to the field," Oregon coach Jen Larsen said. "I'm just glad we . . . got an opportunity to only be down by two. We battled and clawed for every second of that and I wish we had five more minutes. It probably would have made a difference."
Freshman attacker Erin Gaebe (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) scored first for the Ducks with 1:51 into the first half on a left-handed dodge from the top of the eight-meter arch, making the score 1-1. Oregon's Jana Bradley (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) and Theresa Waldron (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool HS) scored one goal each in the first half. UC Davis led at the intermission, 7-3.
Kate Fleming (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) and Jen May (Davidsonville, Md./South River HS) each tallied two goals for Oregon in the second half. May's first goal, with 18:38 remaining in the game, put the score to 8-4, stopping what had been a 34-minute-scoring drought for the Ducks. During that time, Oregon allowed seven goals and UC Davis' goalkeeper Kristen Braasch made six saves on nine shots.
"This should have been our game from the beginning," May said.
Oregon's Lindsay Pittard (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles HS) had one goal and one assist. Lindsay Killian (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool HS) scored one goal and Emily Fowler (Towson, Md./Towson HS) had one assist.
UC Davis was led by sophomore attacker Katie McMahon, who scored four goals for the Aggies. Katie McGovern had three goals, Tiffany Lee added two while Jackie Milhoan and Megan O'Connor each scored one goal for UC Davis.
"We are a very passionate group, from people on the field to people on the sidelines. Everybody is really into what we're doing," Larsen said. "We will go back to the drawing board and get right back in it."
The Ducks' next home game is against Colgate at Pape Field Saturday March 12, at 4 p.m.
