Redshirt junior Britney Henry broke the weight throw school record in her Duck debut, and took second (60-10 3/4) behind Team XO's Cari Soong (first, 64-6 1/2). A UO redshirt last year, Henry broke the former school record held by redshirt senior teammate Brittany Hinchcliffe by 1 foot, 5 3/4 inches (58-5), and missed the NCAA provisional standard (62-4, 19.00m) by 1 foot, 5 1/4 inches.
Henry launched her daily best on her third throw of the prelims, and her first and sixth throws (60-4 1/2 / 60-1 1/4) were also better than the previous school record.
Hinchcliffe followed in fourth place in the weight throw (57-9), and freshman Megan Maloney added sixth in her collegiate debut (52-0 1/2)
Freshman Rebekah Noble won the 800 meters (2:04.22) and crushed the Oregon school record by 2.53 seconds, formerly owned by Eri Macdonald from 2004 (2:06.75). Noble, who ran even 400-meter splits of 62 seconds, was also 1.48 seconds under the NCAA automatic standard (2:05.70). Before this weekend, only three collegians had met the NCAA provisional mark (2:09.00), and the former collegiate leader was junior Shay Shelton of South Carolina (2:07.00).
Also in the 800 meters Saturday, senior Sara Schaaf ran the fastest indoor time of her career (ninth, 2:09.88).
In the mile, junior transfer Dana Buchanan ranked seventh (4:48.39), and her time was 1.39 seconds off the NCAA provisional standard (4:47.00) and only .74 seconds from UO's all-time top-five list.
Other notable marks came from redshirt sophomore Irie Searcy (200, fifth, personal best 25.48), senior Amber McGown (mile, 17th, 4:54.69) and the 4x400 relay (second, 3:49.17).
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, senior Eric Mitchum broke the
Redshirt sophomore Michael McGrath opened his indoor season in the mile with an NCAA provisional clocking (fourth, 4:03.53). Now UO's second-fastest indoor miler ever, he made his first-ever appearance on the NCAA qualifying list after he met the 4:04.90 provisional standard.
The
In the shot put, redshirt junior Colin Veldman took third (55-0 1/4), and his mark was only 3/4 inches from UO's all-time fifth-ranked shot putter James March (55-1, 2003).
Veldman also led the Ducks in the weight throw (second, 58-2) and was 3 3/4 inches from UO's fifth-ranked all-time thrower (NCAA outdoor hammer qualifier Paul Etter, 58-5 3/4, 2005). Other Ducks in the event included freshman Matthew Maloney (fourth, 55-1) and redshirt junior Michael Hill (sixth, 52-3 1/4).
Other notable men's marks came from freshmen Andrew Perri (800, 18th, 1:54.26), Donald Wasteney (mile, 24th, 4:12.64) and Christopher Winter (3,000, 24th, 8:15.50), and redshirt junior heptathlete Brian Bartow (ninth, 4,831).
Complete meet results are available at the www.GoHuskies.com website.
In a separate competition - the Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada - senior pole vaulter Jon Derby jumped his second-best mark of his career (17-0 3/4) Saturday, while junior Emily Enders cleared 12-11 1/2 in the women's competition.
"This was a busy weekend with a lot of good performances to be pleased with," Oregon director of track and field Vin Lananna said. "As a whole, our athletes team had a good, competitive presence and were rewarded with many good early season marks. We had several newcomers who showed their enthusiasm to wear the Oregon jersey, and several other veterans who accomplished their initial goals as they build through the season. We have a new lot of new faces on the team and staff who have quickly come together, and we showed a nice team unity and camraderie."
Looking ahead, the Ducks will send select sprinters and jumpers next weekend to the United Heritage Invitational, Fri.-Sat., Feb. 3-4, hosted by Boise State University at Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho.
