Ducks Sit Last in Suspended Ping Arizona
01/30/06 | Men's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. ? Oregon shot a 28-over 312 Monday in the opening round of the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate, but was headed toward a dramatic improvement in the second round when the horns sounded to suspend play at the par-71, 6,900-yard Arizona National Golf Club due to darkness.
Teams will complete the second round Tuesday at 8 a.m. before the third and final round.
Freshman Landon Banks of Portland fired Oregon's best opening round, carding a 3-over 74 in his second tournament as a Duck and was tied for 45th. Among those players who finished round two, for Oregon, junior Jay Snyder shot a 2-under 69 and sophomore Ted Whitney of Eugene carded an even-par 71.
"We kind of stepped on our toes this morning, but got it back together in the afternoon," said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. "And it was encouraging to see our freshman Landon Banks have the low round for us."
Host Arizona was the first round leader at 12-under 272. No. 10 Arizona State was next at 273, followed by New Mexico (280), Arizona "B" (281) and Denver (282).
