No. 22 Softball Scores Twice In Seventh Inning To Defeat No. 19 Florida
02/10/06 | Softball
HOUSTON, Tex. ? Senior shortstop Breanne Sabol hit two home runs and her high pop up to shallow left field in the bottom of the seventh inning helped lead the 22nd-ranked Ducks to a 5-4 victory over No. 19 Florida at the Wilson-Demarini Invitational in Houston, Texas.
Senior pitcher Amy Harris picked up her first win of the season after replacing freshman Melissa Rice in the sixth inning. Rice came in for starter Elise Orange, who made her collegiate debut in the Ducks' season-opner.
"Our offense carried us today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I was very pleased with how our young pitchers stepped up against a ranked team and I thought our seniors were very aggressive at the plate to help give the defense confidence. Unfortunately, we had some errors, but those are things we can work on and fix."
Sabol finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI while senior Dani Baird went 1-for-3 and accounted for Oregon's third RBI. Senior first baseman Beth Boskovich was 1-for-3 with a run scored and junior Suzie Barnes finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Florida second baseman Lindsay Norfleet led off the third inning with a triple to deep right field and later scored on an RBI by shortstop Stacie Pestrak. Left fielder Lindsey Cameron gave the Gators a 3-1 lead with a two-run home run later in the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Sabol pulled Oregon within a run, 3-2, with her second home run of the game. Boskovich then hit a one-out double to deep right field and third baseman Kristi Jorgensen drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Both advanced on a wild pitch by Florida starter Stacey Nelson and the Ducks tied the game on an RBI single by Baird later in the inning.
The Gators capitalized on Oregon's third error of the game and took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning, but Barnes' line drive back at Nelson in the bottom of the inning scored freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins, who was running for Kristi Leiter. With the game tied 4-4 and Barnes at first, Sabol hit a pop up to shallow left field that was misplayed by the Gator defense, allowing Barnes to score the winning run.
The Ducks face host Houston at 2 p.m. PST.
