02/24/06 | Softball
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. ? The 22nd-ranked University of Oregon softball team (7-6) split a pair of games on the second day of the Palm Springs Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. Friday afternoon. The Ducks defeated No. 8 Texas A&M 13-7 before falling 9-6 to No. 18 Baylor.
Junior right fielder Kayleen Hudson had an outstanding offensive day, going 4-for-6 with two home runs, including a grand slam against the eight-ranked Aggies. Hudson had six RBI on the day and scored four runs. Freshman pitcher Elise Orange improved to 2-2 with the win over Texas A&M while senior Amy Harris (4-4) took the loss against Baylor.
Senior shortstop Breanne Sabol was also impressive offensively for the Ducks, finishing the day 4-for-8 with three RBI, three runs scored, a double and a triple.
In Oregon's first game of the day, the Aggies (9-3) went ahead 1-0 in the first inning after a leadoff single by Sharonda McDonald and an RBI by first baseman Megan Gipson, but the Ducks responded in a big way in the bottom of the first, loading the bases on two walks and an Aggie error. Hudson then hit her second career grand slam to give the Ducks a 4-1 lead.
Texas A&M got a run back in the top of the second, scoring an unearned run on an RBI single by catcher Patti Wunderlich to make it 4-2. The Aggies made it 4-3 on an RBI single by shortstop Holly Ridley in the third inning.
Hudson added her fifth RBI of the game with a line drive single that scored Lovena Chaput, who had doubled to lead off the bottom of the third. With one out in the inning and the Ducks ahead 5-3, sophomore Joanna Gail reached on an error by Ridley to put runners at first and second. Hudson and Gail both advanced on a wild pitch by Aggie pitcher Amanda Scarborough and Hudson eventually scored on a throwing error to home by Texas A&M third baseman Jamie Henshaw.
The Ducks loaded the bases with one out after a walk to pinch hitter Kristi Jorgensen and extended their lead to 7-3 when Scarborough hit Suzie Barnes to score Gail. Oregon scored on another Aggie error later in the inning to go ahead 8-3. Sabol extended the third inning rally with a two-RBI triple that scored Barnes and freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins to put Oregon ahead 10-3. A fourth Aggie error allowed Sabol to score to give Oregon an 11-3 lead.
Texas A&M avoided the mercy rule by scoring a run on an RBI by Henshaw in the fifth inning, pulling the Aggies within 11-4. Senior Rocky Spencer then drove in Ridley to make in 11-5 and a two-RBI single by Ronda Smith made it 11-7 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
With two outs in the sixth, Aggie reliever Lisa Gorzycki gave up back to back walks to Kristi Leiter and Hudson followed by a two-RBI double to Gail that extended the Ducks' lead to 13-7.
In game two, the Ducks gave up four runs to Baylor (7-4) in the top of the first to trail 4-0 going into the bottom of the inning. Oregon got two back after an RBI double by Sabol as well as an RBI by senior Beth Boskovich to make it 4-2 after one inning of play.
Baylor designated player Tessa Lynam hit her second home run of the game in the third inning to score Brette Reagan and give the Lady Bears a 6-2 lead.
Hudson continued her impressive offensive day, hitting her second home run of the afternoon to lead off the fourth inning and pull Oregon within 6-3.
A double steal by Sabol and Barnes in the fifth as well as an RBI single by Boskovich pulled the Ducks within a run, 6-5 after five innings.
The Lady Bears got the run back in the top of the sixth on an RBI by Harmony Schwethelm that scored Miriam Romeo to make it 7-5, but a two-out RBI double by Barnes in the bottom of the inning narrowed the gap for Oregon again and the Ducks trailed by just a run, 7-6, going into the seventh inning.
Baylor scored two runs on three hits in the top of the seventh inning to go ahead 9-6 and reliever Sarah Hausner allowed two Oregon hits, but no runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
