Sabol Ties Single-Game RBI Record In 15-8 Win Over Northridge
03/04/06 | Softball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Senior shortstop Breanne Sabol tied the single-game RBI record (7) and as a team the Ducks set the single game RBI record (14) en route to a 15-8 win over Cal State Northridge on day two of the Aztec Classic in San Diego, Calif. Saturday morning. With the win, Oregon improves to 11-8 overall while Northridge falls to 6-6 overall.
Sabol finished the game 3-for-5 with seven RBI, a double and a run scored. She is now hitting .407 with a team-high 19 RBI.
Eight of the nine Ducks in the starting lineup had at least one hit and Lovena Chaput, Kayleen Hudson and Suzie Barnes finished the game with two hits apiece. Chaput added three RBI with her second home run of the season and Hudson scored two runs. Sophomore catcher Amie Morris didn't account for a hit, but walked three times and scored three runs, which is tied for fifth all-time for runs scored in a single game. Freshman pitcher Melissa Rice relieved starter Elise Orange with no outs in the third to pick up the win and improve to 2-2 this season. In five innings of work, Rice had four strikeouts and allowed just one run. Northridge got a two-out double by first baseman Megan Smith followed by an RBI single up the middle by designated player Janine Grund to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Ducks loaded the bases with one out in the second inning after Northridge pitcher Selena Salazar walked Hudson, Joanna Gail and Morris. Barnes then tied the game, driving in Hudson with a single to left field. Sabol made it 3-1 Oregon with a two-RBI single that scored Gail and Morris. The Matadors scored three runs in the bottom of the second after a two-RBI single by Jamie Pederson as well as an Oregon error that eventually scored Pederson and put Northridge back on top, 4-3. An RBI single by Hudson in the top of the third scored senior Beth Boskovich, who had doubled to lead off the inning, to tie the game for a second time. Freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins broke up the tie with an RBI single back at the pitcher that scored Hudson and put Oregon ahead 5-4. Sabol added two more RBI with a single to right field, scoring Morris and Barnes to extend the Ducks' lead to 7-4. Chaput added to the scoring rally with a three-run home run later in the inning that put the Ducks ahead 10-4. Excessive scoring continued in the bottom of the inning as Northridge immediately got three runs back after back-to- back singles by Smith and Grund followed by a three-run home run by Jan Moshier that pulled the Matadors within three runs, 10-7. Sabol tied the single-game RBI record with her seventh RBI in the top of the fourth inning after hitting a double to right center that scored Morris, Gail and Jenkins to put the Ducks ahead 13-7. Oregon added a run in the fifth inning on an RBI by Gail and scored its 15th run of the game on a Northridge error in the sixth. The Matadors got the run back in the bottom of the sixth, making it 15-8 on an RBI single by Micah Putnam. The Ducks continue tournament play tonight at 7 p.m. vs. No. 25 Fresno State.
