Men?s Golf Wins Washington National Winter Championship

AUBURN, Wash. ? Matt Ma fired a final round 70 and Dustin Pewarchuk added a 73 to lead Oregon to a seven-stroke victory over Washington State Tuesday at the Washington National Winter Championship.
Ma, a junior from Aiea, Hawaii, carded the lowest score of the tournament with a 2-under final round to finish in second place at 10-over 226. Ma was two strokes behind individual medalist Shane Prante of St. Martin's, who had a 73 Tuesday for a 224 total.
Oregon carded the best TEAM round of the tournament on Tuesday, a 299 that gave the Ducks a 917 three-round total. Washington State was next at 924, followed by Western Washington at 929. Washington, Idaho and St. Martin's all tied for fourth at 935.
The tournament, played at the par-72, 7,050-yard Washington National Golf Club, is designed as a junior varsity competition, though seven of Oregon's competitors have seen varsity action during their careers.
Pewarchuk, a junior from Victoria, B.C., climbed into a tie for fourth at 226 in the final standings. Also in the top-20 for the Ducks were Eugene's Chris Dukeminier, who tied for 12th at 232, and Jay Snyder, who tied for 19th at 236.
"Those were pretty good scores under the conditions we played in," said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. "The course played very tough and our guys did a good job of closing it out."
Oregon's spring season gets into full swing with its next event, the Duck Invitational, March 27-28 at Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Ore.
