No. 7 California Defeats Oregon Softball 6-0
04/30/06 | Softball
EUGENE ? The seventh-ranked California Golden Bears used 10 hits from their offense and near-perfect performance from pitcher Kristina Thorson to defeat the University of Oregon softball team 6-0 at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. Thorson allowed just three base runners, but didn't allow an Oregon hit to improve to 28-7 overall. She also had 11 strikeouts.
A three-run home run by Cal catcher Haley Woods in the first inning gave the Bears the early 3-0 lead and Alex Sutton made it 4-0 in the third inning with an RBI single that scored Morgan Siegel. Later in the inning, third baseman Katie Vickers drove in Sutton with a sacrifice fly to center field to extend California's lead to 5-0. The Bears then added a run in the fourth inning on a leadoff home run by Julie Meyer to make it 6-0.
Junior Suzie Barnes and sophomore Joanna Gail were each hit by a Thorson pitch to reach base, but no other Oregon player reached base until senior Beth Boskovich walked in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Oregon reliever Melissa Rice came into the game in the fourth inning and shut down Cal's offense, scattering three hits and striking out four batters. Starter Amy Harris (9-5) took the loss for the Ducks.
The Ducks host Santa Clara at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader before heading to Portland to face Portland State in a doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.
