Jenkins' And Chaput's Big Day Lead Ducks To Sweep Of Santa Clara

EUGENE ? Oregon sophomore Lovena Chaput went 5-for-6 on the day and freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins was 5-for-7 as the University of Oregon softball team swept Santa Clara, 6-0 and 9-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at Howe Field Tuesday afternoon. The win improves the Ducks to 23-20 overall while Santa Clara dips to 20-34.
Chaput and Jenkins were both perfect in the second game, each going 3-for-3 while sophomore Joanna Gail belted her sixth home run of the season. Jenkins also scored five runs in the two games while Chaput scored three times. Gail was 2-for-3 with four RBI in the second game ? her second four-RBI game of the season.
In all, seven different players had at least one RBI in the two games and eight players had at least one hit. The Ducks combined for 20 hits on the day and didn't allow an earned run. Sophomore pitcher Alicia Cook (5-7) got the win in game one while freshman Melissa Rice improved to 7-5 with the win in game two.
In game one, the Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Beth Boskovich that scored Jenkins, who had walked with one out. It was much of the same in the third inning as Jenkins singled to left field and then stole second. She later advanced to third on a groundout by Boskovich and Chaput drove her in with a double to deep center field to make it 2-0. Oregon then capitalized on a Santa Clara to score Chaput and extend the lead to 3-0.
A triple by Suzie Barnes in the fourth inning started a rally for the Ducks as she scored Gail to make it 4-0. Jenkins followed with a single to score Barnes and then scored her third run of the game on an RBI double by Boskovich to give Oregon a 6-0 lead.
It was all the Ducks need as Cook (5-7) allowed the Broncos just three hits and had five strikeouts to pick up the win.
In the second game, Oregon scored in the first inning again after three consecutive singles by Jenkins, Chaput and Boskovich. With the Ducks leading 1-0 and just one out, junior Kayleen Hudson doubled to left center to score Chaput and make it 2-0. A two-RBI double by Gail scored both Hudson and Boskovich to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the third inning, Chaput and Jenkins connected again as Jenkins ledoff the inning with a single and later stole second. Chaput then drove her in with a double off the center field fence to make it 5-0.
The Broncos got their first run of the day in the fourth inning, getting singles by Jessica Clee and Sabrina Franks while also capitalizing a Duck error to make it 5-1.
Gail made sure Oregon got the run back and then some in the bottom of the fifth, driving in Hudson and Chaput with a three-run home run to put the Ducks ahead 8-1. Pinch hitter Kristi Jorgensen doubled down the left field line in Oregon's next at bat, and senior Breanne Sabol drove her in with an RBI single to end the game because of the mercy rule.
Oregon travels to Portland to face Portland State in a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow at 3 p.m.
