Noble Cruises to USA Junior Champs Win
06/23/06 | Track and Field
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? Duck freshman Rebekah Noble paced Oregon's third day action Friday in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the IUPUI campus.
The Spokane, Wash., native won the junior women's 800 meters by .75 seconds (2:05.05), and edged unattached entrant Shannon Leinert (second, 2:05.80) and Chanelle Price of the United Stars (third, 2:06.23).
Noble had also led the 23-woman event prelims Thursday (2:08.44), and was trailed by Blaire Dinsdale of Cedar Valley (second, 2:09.21) and Leinert (third, 2:09.64).
Since she finished top-two in her event final, Noble earned a spot on the U.S. team for the 2006 World Junior Championships, scheduled for Beijing, China, August 15-20.
Noble had won her first U.S. junior title last June in Carson, Calif., in a then-personal best (2:03.73), then added the Pan-Am junior crown a month later in Toronto, Ontario.
In 2006, she has enjoyed equal success on the collegiate scene with outdoor 800m titles in the NCAA (2:02.07), West Regional (2:06.45) and Pac-10 Championships (2:05.81), and she was also was also the NCAA indoor runner-up in mid-March (2:05.72). All-time for UO, she ranks fourth outdoors and second indoors with her respective season and personal bests (2:02.07/2:04.72).
In field event action, redshirt junior Britney Henry capped her first official season for the Ducks with a seventh-place finish in the senior women's hammer (212-2), and ranked second among collegians just behind Jennifer Leatherman of Penn State (sixth, 213-0).
Henry opened with a throw of 204-4 (62.29m), and sandwiched legal marks of 212-2 (64.67m) and 203-9 (62.10m) on her third and fifth efforts between fouls on three of her final five throws.
Redshirt senior teammate Brittany Hinchcliffe trailed in 21st in her USA debut (184-11). The All-American from Olympia, Wash., opened with a mark of 173-7 (52.91m), registered her daily best on her second attempt, and fouled her third try.
Pac-10 alumnae and Nike thrower Jessica Cosby won the event (232-3) over American record holder Erin Gilreath (second, 227-8) and Amber Campbell of the Mjolnir Throws Club (third, 221-6).
Henry and Hinchcliffe ended the season ranked first and second all-time for UO in the hammer with their season bests of 221-7 and 212-3 from the Mt. SAC Relays and NCAA Championships, respectively.
Henry started the season off on a tear with three home wins and a pair of meets in mid-April past the 220-foot line (221-7 ? Mt Sac Relays; 221-5 ? Oregon Invitational). She endured an ankle injury before the Pac-10 Championships, and still finished top-six for the team in all three collegiate championships stops - the NCAA (sixth, 208-7), West Regional (fourth, 209-3) and Pac-10 Championships (fourth, 210-3).
Hinchcliffe saved her best efforts for the twilight of her collegiate career with personal bests in the West Regional (third, 210-5) and NCAA Championships (third, 212-3), after she also scored for UO in the Pac-10 Championships for the second straight season (sixth, 206-1). During the course of the outdoor slate, she topped her preseason best (199-2) in eight of 10 meets.
Indoors in 2006, the pair also broke the school indoor weight throw record as both threw personal bests of 61-1 1/4 in the Mountain Pacific Championships in late February in Seattle.
In men's senior event action Friday, senior Matt Scherer advanced to his second straight USA Championships 400 meters semifinal (12th, 45.59) and missed advancing to the eight-man final by only .18 seconds.
Andrew Rock of adidas led Thursday's semifinal (44.68), and was followed by LaShawn Merritt (third, 44.75) and Darold Williamson (third, 45.11). Only two other collegians ran faster than Scherer Friday ? Indiana's David Neville (fourth, 45.02) and USC's Lionel Larry (11th, 45.50)
Scherer had advanced to the semifinal after he ranked fourth overall Thursday and tops among collegians in the prelims (45.43).
Scherer's time Friday was his sixth straight sub-46.00 clocking and ninth in 11 outdoors races this season. He was only .40 seconds off his personal best (45.19) that won the Pac-10 Championships in Eugene in mid-May ? a mark that ranks him second all-time for UO behind former world record holder Otis Davis (44.9/45.09c).
Also on the track, redshirt sophomore Michael McGrath capped his return season for the Ducks with his debut in the USA Championships senior 1,500 meters (24th, 3:52.57). The Portland, Ore., native had qualified for the meet based on his indoor mile best (3:59.25) that was UO's second-ever sub-4:00 indoor mile, and the NCAA indoor qualifier ranks second all-time for UO.
Reebok's Chris Lukezic led the prelims (3:38.84), and the next-fastest times from the three sections came courtesy of Rob Myers of Reebok (second, 3:38.86) and unattached entrant Gabe Jennings (3:39.89).
Looking back over his '06 outdoor season, McGrath placed fifth for the Ducks in the Pac-10 Championships 800m and 1,500m (1:51.28/3:44.70), and overall he ranked second and first, respectively, on the team with his season bests of 1:50.28 and 3:44.70.
In other men's action Friday, freshman Steven Johnson finished fifth in the hammer (191-9) in his U.S. junior debut. The Medford, Ore., native opened with a throw of 181-8 (55.38m) with the 6-kilogram implement (13.2 lbs.), and added marks of 189-2 (57.66m) and 181-8 (55.39m) later in the prelims. In the event finals, he ended with marks of 184-1 (56.10m), 185-7 (56.56m) and 191-9 (58.46m).
Unattached entrant Walter Henning won the event (235-0) by over 35 feet, and was followed by unattached entrant John Freeman (second, 199-10) and Alexander Pessala of Princeton (third, 198-10).
Johnson had ranked second for the Ducks during the 2006 collegiate season, and had thrown a season best of 177-5 with the 16-pound collegiate implement ? a mark that was just shy of the regional standard of 182-5.
Looking ahead to action Saturday in the fourth day of the five-day meet, a list of Duck entries follows:
