EUGENE, Ore. ? Jessie Chatfield made 12 saves to back a staunch defensive effort as Oregon tied No. 5 Stanford 0-0 in double-overtime Friday night before 460 at Pape' Field.
The Cardinal controlled much of the game, outshooting Oregon 24-3. But Chatfield was up to the task, making a pair of 54th minute saves in traffic in her own goal box, and later changing directions to make a diving stop on a Shari Summers' shot that deflected off an Oregon player in the 72nd minute.
"It doesn't matter how many shots a team takes, it's how many balls get in the net," said Oregon coach Tara Erickson, who saw her team tie for the fourth time in the last five games. "I have never had a stretch of overtime games like this one. It just shows that we are battling, playing very good teams.
"I really think our defense -- with Jessie (Chatfield) and Allison Newton and Nicole Dobrzynski and really everyone on the back line -- stood out tonight and came to play," said Erickson.
Chatfield, a junior from Eugene, Ore., tied a career-high with her 12 stops and earned her 16th career shutout, adding to the school record she claimed earlier this season. Chatfield also made 12 saves in a 5-0 loss to California during the 2005 season. The 12 saves were just three off the single-game record of 15 held by Sarah Peters (2001 versus Washington) and Domenique Lainez (2003 versus Texas A&M).
"Stanford is a very strong team offensively," said Chatfield. "They are fast and very dangerous on top. I give all the credit in the world to the defensive line. They played really amazing tonight."
It was the first time the Cardinal were unable to defeat the Ducks; Stanford was 10-0-0 all-time against Oregon entering Friday night's contest.
With one game remaining in the regular season (California on Sunday), the tie lifted Oregon's record to 8-7-4 (1-3-4 Pac-10), meaning the Ducks will post their third-straight .500 or better season. Oregon has tied four of its last five matches. Stanford went to 13-2-4 and 4-1-3.
Stanford attempted 17 of their 24 shots in the game's first 57 minutes. The Ducks slowed the Cardinal to just seven shots in the final 53 minutes.
Two of Oregon's shots came in the first half -- by Jessica Goodell and Kirstie Kuhns. In the first overtime, Jen Stoltenberg sent a volley in that sailed just over the crossbar for Oregon's third shot.
The 24 shots was the most Oregon has allowed this season. Conversely the three shot attempts were a season-low.
Oregon rounds out the regular season with an 11 a.m. match with No. 19 California Sunday at Pape' Field. Senior players Dylann Tharp and Tiffany Smith and senior manager Gina Pappas will be honored in pre-game ceremonies.
"We are just sick of tying," said Chatfield. "We have nothing to lose and everything to gain in the next game on Sunday."
GAME NOTES:
A little banged up entering tonight's game, Erickson played her freshmen extensively against the Cardinal...Stoltenberg and Mercedes Walters started, while Kirstie Kuhns and Jill Jensen saw extended minutes off the bench and Bree Rowe made her third appearance of the season. "The substitutions were great," said Smith, who played up top with freshmen for most of the night. "We really responded well to it. I think we had four freshman in at one time in the game. It was great, they really showed that they could work hard." Chatfield's shutout was her fourth of the year (tied for third on the single-season list)...Tharp tied Kristi Morris (1996-99) for sixth all-time with her 72nd career start...Newton entered that top 10 with her 58th career start...No. 5 Stanford is the highest-ranked team Oregon has ever tied; the game was just the program's third tie with a top-25 squad...Oregon is 3-0-6 in its last nine overtime games.
