
Ducks Come Up Just Short Against Stony Brook, 16-14

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- In a back and forth contest in which eight different Ducks scored goals, Oregon fell, 16-14, to Stony Brook on Friday afternoon.
Senior Brooke Dieringer led the way for the Ducks, tallying four goals against the Sea Wolves including one that capped a three goal run by the Ducks that tied the game with twelve minutes to play. The Ducks would never gain the lead, however, as Stony Brook would score two goals only eleven seconds apart at the 9:13 mark and the 9:02 mark to take the lead for good.
Attacker Alison Leiner brought the game within one goal with 5:19 to play, her only goal of the game, but SBU's Kaitlyn Leggio put goals home at the 2:12 mark and with 1:13 left to play to put the game out of reach. Dieringer tallied her fourth goal of the day with :02 seconds remaining for the final margin of victory.
Junior co-captain Jen May added three goals for the Ducks, while Alicia Burkhart scored two goals.
Theresa Waldron led the Ducks with two assists in addition two her one goal and Jana Bradley, Kate Fleming and Liora Lobel all tallied a single goal.
Attacker Ilsa van den Berg, the Ducks' leading scorer, was quiet on the afternoon, tallying only one assist.
The Ducks went on a four goal streak at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half to take their one of their two leads of the day, which reached as many as two goals at 8-6. SBU's Katie Salvano and Jenna Celano scored at the 20:56 mark and the 20:08 mark respectively to tie it up.
Dieringer scored at 18:02 to give the Ducks their second lead, but a four goal SBU run ending at 13:21 would end the Ducks' hopes.
Goalkeeper Anna Poponyak was tagged with the loss, as she played 54:39 in her second game returning from an ACL injury. The Encinitas, Calif. native made 8 saves, allowing 13 goals.
In a chippy game that included six yellow cards, only one of which was on the Ducks, Oregon and SBU were even in almost every statistical category.
The Ducks converted six of their ten free position opportunities, while the Sea Wolves were five-of-eight on the day.
Stony Brook controlled eight more draws on the afternoon, with Leggio collecting six for SBU. May and Dieringer led the Ducks with three each.
Oregon returns to action tomorrow as they take on Lehigh at 4 p.m.
