15th-Ranked Ducks Bounce Back in Vegas, Beat New Mexico State

LAS VEGAS ? For the second straight game at the 2007 Eller Media Stadium Classic, the 15th-ranked University of Oregon softball team found themselves behind early, but unlike Thursday's defeat to host UNLV, the Ducks rallied back for an 8-3 win over New Mexico State in their first game on Friday.
Oregon (22-3), off to its best start in team history, overcame a pair of two run deficits to down the Aggies (15-7), improving to 2-1 at the tournament with two games remaining.
Seven different Ducks recorded at least one hit in a balanced attack that was paced by slappers Suzie Barnes and Blair Williamson, who led the team with two hits apiece.
Junior right-hander Alicia Cook (12-1) won her 12th consecutive decision, allowing three runs ? two earned ? on eight hits over seven complete. The Elmira product struck out four and issued one intentional base on balls.
New Mexico State ace righty Kim Watson (10-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in three-plus innings of work.
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, the Ducks called on Neena Bryant to pinch hit for junior backstop Amy Morris with runners on second and third and nobody out. The freshman delivered a two-run single to left to tie the score, chasing Watson.
Oregon continued the hit parade, aided by some shaky fielding by New Mexico State, tacking on two more runs in the frame for a 5-3 edge. Sophomore center fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins recorded an RBI double on a bunt to third base and the Aggies failed to cover second.
The Ducks added a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Senior designated player Ann Marie Topps delivered a two-run single, plating Barnes and Williamson, who had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and were advanced to third and second, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Jennifer Salling.
Salling gave herself up despite needing a hit to extend her season-high 13-game hitting streak and finished 0-for-1 with a pair of walks and one run scored.
Freshman Ashley Roszkos got the offense going for the Aggies, lifting first-inning Cook offering just inside the foul pole down the left field line for a two-run homer.
After the Ducks scratched out a single run in the bottom of the first, NMS plated an unearned run in the third for a 3-1 edge.
Next up for Oregon will be Miami (Ohio) at 8:15 p.m. The Ducks complete play at the tournament on Saturday, facing Longwood University at 3:45 p.m.
