NORMAL, Ill. ? Allison Newton and Teresa Bowns each scored two goals to lead Oregon past Illinois State 5-1 Sunday at Adelaide Street Field.
Newton recorded the Ducks' first two goals in a span of less than two minutes. She scored from 15 yards out in the 17th minute, and then kneed in a loose ball following a scramble in the Redbirds' goal box in the 19th minute for the eventual game-winner.
"Newton hit a cracker of a shot from the left side, which kind of got us going," said Oregon coach Tara Erickson of Newton's first score. "It was a good game for Teresa Bowns, too. She definitely made some things happen with her creativity up top."
It was the team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season for Newton, a junior midfielder from Eugene, Ore., who also got the first game-winning goal of her career. It was also her first multi-goal game.
The two scores boosted Newton's career total to 11, which moved her past Kristi Morris (1996-99) into fifth on the UO career goals list.
Oregon (5-3) matched a season high with five goals and outshot Illinois State (4-3) 20-10.
Bowns registered the first two goals of her career. In the 27th minute, she challenged Illinois State goalkeeper Katie Grill-Donovan, who attempted to clear the ball, but her kick deflected off Bowns and into the Redbird net to give Oregon a 3-0 lead.
After ISU's Carrie Schurr scored on a header in the 37th minute to cut Oregon's lead to 3-1, forward Jill Jensen made it 4-1 in the 42nd minute. The freshman from Puyallup, Wash., knocked in a cross from Bowns for her first career score. Bowns and sophomore midfielder Dani Oster were credited with assists on Jensen's goal.
Bowns, a sophomore midfielder from Redmond, Wash., added an insurance goal on a breakaway in the 68th minute, giving her a five-point match.
"I liked our attack today," said Erickson. "We had some dynamic play, some very nice goals.
"I was a little disappointed to let a goal in, and we could have been even more efficient in our offense, but we got the win we needed," she said. "We got back to playing Oregon soccer."
The Ducks have now scored 18 goals through eight games. Last season, it took Oregon 16 games to reach the 18-goal mark.
The win allowed Oregon to wrap up its four-game road trip with a 2-2 mark.
The Ducks now return home for three straight, beginning with Portland State on Sept. 30.
