EUGENE - The No. 8 University of Oregon volleyball team's 15-match home winning streak came to an end Sunday with its 3-1 loss to No. 5 Washington at McArthur Court.
A school record-high 3,817 spectators saw No. 5 Washington (21-4, 12-3) win by a 25-22, 22-25, 31-29, 25-20 score over Oregon (21-6, 9-5), and claim both matches vs. the Ducks this season after a five-set victory in Seattle in mid-October.
For the match, Washington hit .272 overall and .351, .275, .216 and .265 in the first, second, third and fourth sets, while UO ended with a .251 mark (.294 / .341 / .278 /.057).
Three Ducks ended with double-doubles - senior outside htiter Gorana Maricic (19 kills, .261, 16 digs), junior outside hitter Sonja Newcombe (15 kills, .256, 12 digs) and sophomore otuside hitter Heather Meyers (13 kills, 11 digs).
Junior middle blocker Neticia Enesi added 11 kills, hit .348 and led the team in blocks (6). Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic had 58 assists - her career high in a four-set match and just behind her marks in five-set affairs at UCLA (64) and USC (60), and tying her mark from the recent contest at Seattle.
On defense, senior libero Katie Swoboda logged 20 digs, and senior middle blocker Kristen Forristall rattled off nine kills, hit. 300 and came up with four blocks.
The Portland, Ore., native Swoboda moved into a tie for third on the all-time Pac-10 digs list (2,064) Sunday and is now only seven away from the second-best mark ever.
Djordjevic also climbed the Duck all-time assists into third place and now has 2,717 altogether, while Enesi moved to 10th all-time for UO in career block assists (252), and her 282 total blocks is only eight away from the 10th-best mark in that category (290). The Dalles, Ore., native already stood seventh all-time in career points, and her 853 career points is only 13 away from the sixth-best mark.
Maricic has now led UO in kills in 19 matches this season, and Sunday's total (19) gives her six of the team's nine-highest marks this year (32, 22, 20, 20, 19, 18). Sunday's dig total (16) also tied her season high that she had logged twice before in '08.
Enesi has now topped .300 in six straight matches and 18 overall in '08. Meyers' kill tally (13) was only one off her season best (14) from the four-set win vs. Arizona last month, while her digs mark (11) was her second-best this season.
“It a disappointing loss,” Oregon head coach Jim Moore said. “I'm frustrated with how many errors we had, and we gave away too many points. They were in the game longer than we were mentally, and it led to several runs for Washington and we let it slip away. We didn't stay in it emotionally or mentally, and they came out with the win. We have to get mentally tougher and play better.”
For Washington, Becky Perry had 20 kills and hit .250, and two others had double-digit kill tallies, Airial Salvo (12, .233) and Bianca Rowland (11, .333). Rowland paced the team in blocks (8), setter Jenna Hagglund had 52 assists, and libero Tamari Miyashiro finished with 23 digs.
Sunday's crowd broke the former mark (3,716) from UO's win vs. Oregon State in 1996, while Friday night's 3-0 win vs. Washington State drew 3,169 - the third-largest in school history.
Fourth-season Duck head coach Jim Moore and his program have now
played in front of eight of the 14 largest crowds in school history:
2,777 (#4, vs. OSU, 11/16/07), 3,672 (#5, vs. Washington, 11/3/06),
2,375 (#8, vs. Washington, 9/21/07), 2,260 (#9, vs. Oregon State,
9/29/06), 2,159 (#10, vs. Oregon State, 10/12/08) and 1,842 (#14, vs.
California, 11/16/06).
Sunday's match was UO's second on Fox Sports this season, and will be re-shown several times across the nation and a list of rebroadcast dates/times is included at the bottom of this release.
Looking ahead, UO makes its last roadtrip of the regular season next weekend, and plays at Arizona and Arizona State, Friday-Saturday, November 21-22, respectively, with both matches set to start at 7 p.m.
