TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 8 University of Oregon volleyball team lost 3-1 at the University of Arizona Friday night to open its final regular season road trip of the season.
The Ducks (21-7, 9-6) fell in the four-set contest by a score of 25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 12-25 to the Wildcats (15-12, 5-10).
Three UO players had double-digit figures in kills - junior Neticia Enesi (13 kills, .750), senior Gorana Maricic (12 kills) and junior Sonja Newcombe (13 kills).
Among other team highs Friday, junior setter Nevena Djordjevic added 43 assists, senior Katie Swoboda came up with 22 digs, and senior middle blocker Kristen Forristall had three blocks.
Swoboda's dig Friday tally moved her to second all-time in Pac-10 history with her career total now at 2,086, and now ahead of the third-place total of former USC player Debora Seilhamer (2,071, 2003-06). For comparison's sake, the all-time category leader is recent Arizona State player Sydney Donahue (2,385, 2004-07).
Enesi's hitting mark Friday tied the seventh-best mark all-time for UO and was just off her season best (.786) for the team at Washington State from mid-October that ranked fourth highest all-time for the Ducks.
On UO's all-time season points list, the returning All-American Maricic's 12 points Friday gives her 430 on the season and moved her up a position into a tie for ninth with the total of teammate Heather Meyers from the '07 campaign.
Among other notable stats, Djordjevic's +40 assist total was her 10th of the season.
Hitting-wise, UO started out the match with a .455 hitting total, then followed with marks of .250, .325 and -.083 in the second, third and fourth sets, respectively, to end with an overall tally of .234. Conversely, UA combined on totals of .188, .405, .350 and .391 in the first-fourth sets to end with a .333 hitting mark - the second-highest by a Duck foe in '08 behind Stanford's .383 mark in late September.
Individually for Arizona, Tiffany Owens had 22 kills (.383), while Stephanie Snow led the team in hitting (.733) and added 11 kills. Setter Paige Weber racked up 50 assists, libero Alanna Resch ended with 17 digs, and Snow had a match-high eight blocks.
Friday's outcome ended a four-match UO win streak vs. UA since 2006 - all of which were three-set affairs. The Wildcats now hold a 38-12 edge in the series and extended their home success in league action in '08 that included previous wins vs. No. 10 USC (3-2) and No. 7 Cal (3-2) and a five-set loss to No. 5 Washington.
Looking ahead, the Ducks play Saturday night at Arizona State at 6 p.m. Mountain Time (7 p.m. Pacific Time), and live stats will be available at the www.TheSunDevils.com website via the volleyball schedule link.
